I just picked this up today from the local shop. I don't normally buy Jefferson Nickels, but this one just spoke to me. I thought it would be nice to add a first year proof to the collection, and all the other 1938 Nickels I have, have a bison on the reverse. I also noticed it was an unattributed FS-401 Re-engraved obverse. The light pastel toning was the deal sealer for me. Let me know what you think.
There is very little spotting which is what often holds down the grade on proof Jefferson Nickels, but a PR67 is still a $300 coin, and I'm gonna say that your impulse buy was in part due to the affordability of the coin. For that reason, I say PR66
I know Proof coins are very difficult to grade via photos. But most of you got the correct grade. This particular coin does make a decent jump in price going from 66 to 67. I personally would grade it at a 67. Also it's an unattributed FS-401 re-engraved obverse. So it has a lot of potential. This is in an ANANCS PF-66 small white holder. Had it been in an ANA holder, there would be no chance of me trying for an upgrade and attribution. But, it being in the later all numeric serial number with 6 digits, I think I may try for the upgrade.
