Is there a Seated Liberty $1 I can buy cheap in MS condition?

Your goal of a slabbed MS for under $800 in a straight-grade is pretty much unobtainable. For that price, you will have to settle for a details coin in a slab or a raw coin with problems and there are always issues of authenticity with this series.

Or just save the cash and buy an MS coin you really like. The saving, waiting, and picking the right one is just as big a thrill, at least to me, as getting the coin.

Try West Coast Coin in Toledo, Or...they usually have a couple clean straight graded examples, but have patience...an EF45 is about $700 or better.

 

Here are two recent purchases that I got by patiently scouring every listing on eBay. The 1846 was $530, and the 1873 was $560. I estimate both of them at AU55. With hard work and patience you should be able to do this too.

Yeah those are very nice coins it’s just that I would never buy raw coins on Ebay because it’s too risky.

Perhaps, but if the choice is between these marvelous coins, and no coins at all, then I stand by my choice. It is often said that coins of this era have usually been cleaned, and these have had 150-175 years for that to happen.

While many eschew cleaned coins, I fail to see why I should reject a coin that shows a well-established past tradition and carries the intentions of a previous collector with a different viewpoint.

Yes, I would buy a cleaned coin and a circulated one, and enjoy it for what it is. Who am I to be a snob about what a coin is, or is not, if I enjoy it?

 

It will take some searching, however every so often one slides through the cracks at a coin auction for around $750-$1000. But they often have been cleaned or have a dull appearance. I would rather have a nice original XF-45+ or AU 50-58 that can be had $800 or less.

 

Each to his or her own, but the subject is to find an unc. spec., and cheap probably be well over $1000 for one of these.

 

@Gam3rBlake, you set the criteria as MS, Slabbed, Straight-Graded, under $800. As I said before, you will not be able to satisfy all these criteria unless you become more than extremely lucky. If you're relying on being that lucky, then buy a lottery ticket.

However, I have found this one that satisfies all your criteria except MS. This one is ANACS graded AU-55. I don't know if posting this and then naming the dealer is a violation of Forum rules so if you PM me, I will name you the dealer-he is extremely reputable and is a big name in Liberty Seated Coinage. BTW, I have no business or other relations with this dealer other than being an occasional customer.

1859-O or 1860-O will be the cheapest, but unless it has problems it will be over $1,000. Especially if it is certified.

Look, forget 800 dollars ok? Get out a few thousand, buy the problem free Carson City of your dreams and you will be happy, only need one, and if you ever want to sell it, no problem!

 

I wouldn’t count on it.
