PCGS Errors

I was looking towards purchasing a coin from a dealer that is in a PCGS Holder. However, I noticed that the designation, variety, and PCGS Coin No. listed on the holder are wrong.

I checked the certification number on the PCGS website and the Variety that is listed there is different from what is listed on the holder although the grade is the same. I can see how the wrong info was put on the holder and how the wrong PCGS Coin No. was picked if the grader was not familiar with this "area" of coins. It's possible that the dealer may not even be aware of the actual coin that is in this holder. The actual coin in the holder would be worth more than the coin that is listed on the holder.

This could be good for me as I might be able to score this particular coin for a price lower than what I might be able to normally. I would be looking to put this coin into my collection and ultimately have the holder fixed since it is displaying the wrong info.

So my question becomes has anyone dealt with PCGS on correcting the info that is listed on the holder? Is this something they would do for free or would I have to pay a reholder fee?

was it authentic? the holder i mean? lots of fake holders coming out -- and the newer ones are very deceptive!

What probably happened is several coins were sent in together and at the end, when they slabbed them, two got mixed up and put in each other's slab. I would personally recommend leaving it in the current condition and get an outside authority to attribute the coin, since it is actually worth more being an error slab situation and there are collectors of error slabs. ;)

If you dew buy it, please post it. I'd love to see it. :D

The holder looks good as far as I can tell. Anything to look out for on the holder?

Collectors of error slabs ?! that's ridiculous I can't see the reason behind that since that in a hundred years no one will give a darn who graded it but the coin will still be worth money...

I agree, post a pic of your coin showing the entire slab, as big as you can. I find it very suspicious for the on-line info not to match.

I don't. It doesn't happen a lot but it isn't extremely rare either. I wouldn't trust PCGS to get the variety attribution right anyway. They have a very poor record there. Never trust variety attributions on PCGS or NGC slabs. ANACS is better (used to be MUCH better) but even those should be double checked.

The possibility exists that the slab and/or the coin is counterfeit. It would be helpful if you could post a picture or give us a more precise description of the coin & label.

    Very best regards,

Just to give an update on this one I will probably pass on this one as I have found another one of these coins in the PCGS holder with the correct labeling with a 69 grade (vs. the 65 the one in the error slab has). I will see if I can get some pics.
