Hi there , i am looking up some details on a coin for my father , i think its some kind of penny or half penny, i have looked on some webesites that have many that look alike but not the same , i was wonderin if any of you experts could help me out
I moved your thread to the Euro group as some of these users are far more experienced in UK coins. I am sure one of them will be able to assist you in identifying this coin.
Well that's a Victorian coin, either a penny, a halfpenny or a farthing, and is dated between 1838-1860 But i need a diameter and an obverse pic.
I will certainly yield to Sylvester's knowledge on British coinage. As I still don't know the exact diameter of the OP's coin, I was comparing the coins in the following links, to make my identification: HALF PENNY PENNY
Now I am going to take a shot in the dark on this one. Looking at the link for the Half Penny Jody provided, the curl on the hair is considerbly different. Both dated 1841. Now if I were to draw a conclusion based strictly on the photos, I would say this is not a half penny. Too many differences. Now of course, I have no idea if any varieties exist on this issue. So I will pass the torch back to sylvester
looking at the date between the two, i think you may be right... copper not being my area. I have a feeling that picture doesn't show them exactly side by side, i think the dimensions of each picture must be different.
so it's probably a penny, (bear in mind i wasn't looking at a picture when i came to my orininal assumption... i was doing it from memory, what little of it bothers to even consider such a low species as copper)
Run of the mill i'm afraid as it's a low grade specimen. But you will be pleased to know that it's not as common as the later bronze stuff minted after 1860. I bet you could get a few few quid for it, but nothing over a fiver.
Syl, How long was this the standard size?? I have an 1835 sumthin that I am not sure of. Also, what is the diameter of the farthings??? Scott
Here's some info from the web: Farthing, copper 1821-1860 = 22mm Farthing, bronze 1860-1956 = 20mm Halfpenny, copper 1825-1860 = 28mm Halfpenny, bronze 1860-1967 = 26mm Penny, cartwheel 1797 = 36mm Penny, copper 1806-'07 = 35mm Penny, copper 1825-'60 = 34mm Penny, bronze 1860-1967 = 31mm
Well it's currently going towards 19.10 hours where i am (or 7.10pm if you prefer) So i guess i'll be either 5 or 6 hours ahead of most people on here.
