With my giftee’s gift well on its way, I have opened my Saturnalia gfit. In it were a couple chonky Song Dynasty coins and a cute little charm! I appreciate the effort put in by my Saturn to find coins that fit within my collecting interests. Thanks a bunch!

Worried about where the gift I should be receiving may be, but even more about the gift that I sent, since I know what was inside that one! Watching mail not move is nerve-wracking. I'm hopeful that things seem to be getting a bit more back to normal, though.

We are still waiting for Christmas gifts that were mailed to the FF kids at the beginning of December. We've decided that we are going to keep our tree and decorations up until they arrive and then we are going to have a 2nd Christmas. :)
Same goes with my SS gift. Still hasn't arrived. I'm sure it will eventually.
Doesn't make the waiting any easier though!

Last Wednesday I posted a notice from the main Post Office that they received a package from Cummings, GA that might be my Saturnalia Surprise. That package has been sitting in the main Post Office for 5 days, & it's only 17 miles from where I live. How's that for great service :banghead:!

Yippee :woot:! Secret Saturn finally arrived today at 2:49 this afternoon :D. The package contained 4 coins, from TypeCoin971793, (Tom); an attractive Tet of Diocletian from Alexandria, Emmett 4083, Year 1, AD 284/285, with a reclining Tyche on the reverse. Like most of these coins it was struck on a raggedy flan weighing 7.79 gm, 20.58 mm. The other 3 coins were ancient Chinese cash coins, 2 from the Northern Song Dynasty, AD 960/1127, & the other was a well cast Wang Mang, Huo Quan, AD 9/23, 2.85 gm, 22.3 mm, very similar to other coins posted by CT members . Thank you very much Tom. Sometime after tomorrow I'll post photos of these coins. I'll be glued to the computer monitor tomorrow watching my 103 coins & medals being auctioned off at CNG E-Auction 483 :wideyed:.

And Saturn keeps on truckin into the new year. I haven’t seen mine yet but I have hope.
I will ask our resident party guy @Ryro what the rules are regarding the general Saturnalia debauchery: Since there are still a few outstanding Saturnalia gifts yet to arrive, does this mean we can still party? I think we can still consider it to be Saturnalia, no? Asking for a friend (me)...

Well I will take that as the green light :)

Also, I can’t imagine downing an entire bottle of Jack like that but if anyone could do it, it’d be Belushi.

I was very excited to discover an unexpected package awaiting me in the mailbox when I arrived home late last night. I became even more excited when I read the first line of the attached UK customs form: "Christmas Card." Within the package I found a very nice Christmas card from Wales, along with a magnet that I recognized as the 'male gorgonian' from Roman Bath, and a beautiful Republican denarius:

    tempImage1jwa3J.png

The denarius is a fantastic specimen of RRC 393/1a, struck by the moneyer Cn. Lentulus circa 76-75 BC:

    lent.jpg
Denarius of the Roman Republic, struck circa 76-75 BC, probably in Spain; 20mm, 6.69g; Crawford RRC 393/1a
    Obverse
: Bust of the Genius Populi Romani (Genius of the Roman People), draped, hair tied with band, and with scepter over shoulder; above, G•P•R.
Reverse: Scepter with wreath, globe and rudder; on left, EX; on right, S•C; below, CN•LEN•Q.

I give my heartfelt thanks to my Secret Saturn and hope that his own gift has arrived safely as well. It's been a hot minute since I acquired a new Republican coin, and I couldn't be happier with this one! Not only does it display some interesting iconography, but it is also an exceptional specimen of the type.

Take heart that the mail is finally beginning to move like normal again. I hope that my gift arrives in safe hands soon.

    Huzzah!
That is a great coin and magnet. The red mail box brings back memories of when I lived in the UK almost 20 years ago. Glad to hear things are making their way through the system. I am still waiting here :)

My Saturnalia gift has arrived too. Three lovely coins. One right on my main collecting area and the other two in brand new and fascinating areas.

I will post images and descriptions this weekend when I have more time. (It takes me ages to photograph, upload, stitch-together, etc. images.)

Io Saturnalia! After a 2 month journey through USPS purgatory, my Saturnalia gift arrived yesterday! My gift was this nice denarius of a young Caracalla. I have many coins of Caracalla as an adult, but I did not have any coins of him as a child, so this was a perfect choice. I'm very happy to now have a nice portrait of Caracalla from back when he was just a young, wide-eyed little psychopath.

Thanks again to my secret Saturn for a great gift!

That’s excellent that there are still Saturnalia gifts rolling in. Man the USPS dropped the ball last year!

I figure that there are still people that never received gifts and we are getting to the time where we can say those packages are probably lost.

If you didn’t receive a package please send me a PM. I recently bought some coins for the express purpose of sending replacement Saturnalia gifts. As I said in the OP EVERYONE will receive a gift for Saturnalia even if it is in February.

The USPS could learn from you on how to take responsibility for something.
I don't think you should have to...You've done an amazing job at setting this whole thing up.
I for one, would like to thank you again for all your hard work.

    Thanks @furryfrog02 !

I want to bump this thread one last time to give anyone who hasn’t seen my above offer the chance to read it and send me a PM for a replacement gift.

If I have less people PM me than I planned for I will take the coins I’ve set aside and use them as prizes in a coin game I plan to host soon. The spirit of Saturnalia lives on

I realize I promised to show the coins I received and then promptly forgot. better late than never.

This small bronze coin is from the Satavahana Dynasty of India, and was struck under king Satakarni circa 30-107 AD. At first I thought the obverse showed an elephant with tower on it, but I couldn't see the head. When I researched it, it turns out the "tower" is the head, which was quite stylized and geometric despite the rounded body - the trunk would be off the flan to the top. The reverse is the Ujjain symbol. Mitchener #4941-4952; zeno 33149. This coin supplements my small collection of Indian coins.

This is a small silver pre-Islamic Central Asian coin. It is from Soghd, the mint of Samarkand and dates circa the first century AD. It is an imitation of a Seleucid type with head left on obverse and a standing archer on reverse (minus head!!). The coin is scyphate - something I only associated with Byzantine coinage. It is Hoover 512; zeno 217268 (almost exact match). I had nothing remotely similar in my collection, though I have several wide and thin AE fals from Samarkand from the 10th-13th centuries.
    saturn2.jpg

This is a very small "barbarous" FEL TEMP REPARATIO Falling Horseman coin (one of my main areas of collecting). The face and some lettering can be made out on the obverse. Unfortunately I was unable despite many tries to get the camera to focus on the reverse - it all came out totally blurry - but you can definitely make out the torso of the Emperor, his spear and the victim.

Thanks for sharing @otlichnik . That elephant coin is quite interesting. I also thought it was a headless elephant with either a tower or some kind of a riding apparatus.

    Io Saturnalia :)
