1917 slq this can't be ms

This is a nice 1917 SLQ in a PCGS slap stating MS-63-FH , look at the leading edge of the eagles wing , to me it's wear , opinions wanted .

I have them in higher grades than that with some rub on em

 

Looks okay to me - I had to turn the glare down on the coin, but it looked okay to me. Of course I am not an expert on these. Just my opinion.

 

I don't see any wear, but then again, my best SLQ is a VG.

 

While your opinion is just as valid as anyone else's, PCGS (and NGC) generally don't grade on a coin AU based on high-point wear, they grade AU if the field's luster is impared.

I'm not saying it's right or it's wrong -- but it is what it is, and it's been that way for quite some time, IMO.

 

looks acceptable to me for MS-63

Spock, my dear friend, there will be no class action because no one has been damaged. They have all followed bad advice. They have trusted opinions of someone that maybe they should not have. They have paid people for opinions that when it all comes out are only that... opinions, and not so accurate ones at that.

When you sue, you have to prove damages, not just prove that someone was wrong. By believing TPGs people have made bad decisions and compounded them into their own financial loss, but the TPGs didn't make them do it.

 

If you say it enough times, eventually they figure it out. :hammer:

Yes, really.

Bottom line: Don't confuse ANA grading with TPG grading -- they are not similar at all when it comes to AU and low MS coins. And those "discussions" you refer to center on that very issue, IMO.

In a bit more detail: Those in the ANA school will call it an AU coin with high-point wear (and value it at $100), and those in the TPG school call it an MS 62/3 coin with stacking friction (and value it at $100 -- not coincidentally). And the EAC dudes, the eternal bastion of grading integrity, would grade the coin XF (and value it at $120 ).

p.s. I can't take credit for this "realization" when it comes to AU grades at TPG's -- it was first told to me by one of my numismatic mentors several years ago, and has been repeated to me by other numismatists I trust and respect. While the "rule" does have exceptions, I think it is a great rule of thumb when trying to grade AU/MS coins in the eyes of the TPG.
