Quick question for you: I, too, crack out graded/slabbed coins for my 20th/21st Century type set and have kept the inserts & labels. Is there any risk (when going to sell the book) of a buyer (probably a LCS or dealer) not giving credit to the provenance/certification of the grade/variety?

Several of my coins in this type set are high-quality key and/or better dates
(e.g. MS60 1932-S Washington quarter, MS63FB 1917-D Mercury dime, etc.) and I would hate to not get "credit" for having paid for the grade at time of purchase. I figured as long as they were in an archival-quality Dansco and I had the original label, they would be protected.

Thoughts on how to archive these labels with the type set? Appreciate, in advance, any tips on this.

    Cheers!

What about just taking pics of the coins pre-crackout ?

Thankfully (especially after your reaffirming that it was a good idea at the time) I have done that with most of them (at least the ones >$350). That is a great reminder for me to keep doing that going forward. Thanks! :)

EDIT: edited because I am an accountant, not a Professional Speller.

First of all I do believe that dealers will look at the crack outs as raw coins.
Frankly I'm not concerned one bit about that.
Secondly I put the labels in 2-1/2 x 2-1/2 flips in an envelope behind the last page

Now that is also a great idea - will start on it this evening. While I'm not ready to turn my collections over to my boys (just yet, anyways LOL) they have zero interest in coins and I would hate for them to get taken advantage of when the time comes, if they decide to sell them. This will help with pointing them in the right direction.

    Thanks!

Be sure to recommend dealer you trust if they need to sell.

I'll put their business cards in the flips, too - great suggestion. Thanks for all of the help!

At first glance, I thought the 1814 cent was graded "plain 4". What the ..?
Then I read it again :):shame:

There is a ginormous amount of risk because “they may not grade it that way again.” Then they’ll offer you base grade, cleaned value for the coin because that’s how it “could” grade upon resubmission.

So that means the TPGs must be wildly inconsistent and just putting on a facade of consistency, or raw coins are worthless outside of slabs because no one knows how to properly grade. Or maybe a combination of the two.

    Same story as above

You will probably get slightly better than MS60 Details, cleaned money for them which is roughly 50-70% of GS MS60 bid.

It’s hardly fair, but when TPG inconsistency is commonly used as a (slightly) valid excuse to lowball, you know the coin market is broken

Doing the same thing...somewhat. I'm getting ready to crack out an XF details Trade dollar because I didn't trust myself enough to find a raw one that wasn't fake. And the cleaning isn't too bad.

What is an 1857 25c "test cut"? I've never heard of any such designation.

    @micbraun
It stuck to the back of another tag that had some stickum on it.
I have no idea why it's red, I might be able to change it.
