I picked this up today, in an ANACS slab, for some morning fun, care to guess the grade? Anyone else have coins for the usual guessing game? If so, please post! 1917obv.jpg 1917rev.jpg

I like the grade, but given ANACS and could be older slab, I would guess lower, like VF 20.

I would agree with VF30 based on wear on cap/shield and wings. Hard to tell though the pictures aren't clear.

Sorry about the pics - seller's pics, I don't have the coin in hand yet (plus I'm a lousy photographer, so I got that going for me ;) )

A good friend of mine uses his flatbed scanner for his slabs and the pictures come out great, Really good as a matter of fact. As I haven't had the opportunity to try that out I can't speak from personal experience.

When it comes to taking pictures from your phone, camera shake is one of the main issues. To combat that, what I've done in the past is grab a pile of books or something else solid, place the phone on it with the coin on the flat surface below. Then get the whole coin fill the screen, make sure it is in focus, lit properly etc, then gently touch to shutter button so there is no shake. Works like a charm

Exactly what I was saying "or something solid"

Doesn't take an expensive phone either. I use my cheap Android LG ($110 phone) to take the majority of my pictures

1917obv1.jpg 1917rev1.jpg 1917sobv.jpg 1917srev.jpg Here are a couple more - raw - I'm wondering if there is something wrong with them that I can't see, less than $65 for the pair, so I'm pretty excited. The weaker of the two, the 1917-S is relatively low mintage (1,952,000) in the series and decent readable dates are less common in the pre-1925 versions. Thoughts on grades? (pictures are from seller)

The 1917P is a Type I - full rivets and decent shield details - wings/feathers on reverse are decent, also. I would grade (IMHO) VF (looks like an old cleaning?).

The 1917-S is similar in wear & details - w/a stronger reverse strike. I would grade (IMHO) VF, as well.

$65 for the pair is a good deal - almost too good, right? I've seen 1917-S Type 1's in VF go for $140.00 - here is one on APMEX active right now: for $159.99.

I'll defer to the real SLQ/experts, as my grading experience is in Lincolns. ;-)

Thanks AJ, that's exactly what I thought as to grade and the 1917-S, which was my primary interest. It seems I'm working on 4 SLQ sets now of various grades - 2 slabbed, 2 raw in Whitman albums. I thought my lowball bid had little chance of winning - and it was $20 higher than the bid I won with, so I wondered if I'm missing some obvious flaw, lol.

My pleasure - like I said, outside of being possibly cleaned (and not many >100 year old un-slabbed coins aren't these days) they look pretty decent in terms of details. Good luck with your SLQ sets! I'm starting on Kennedy halves - time to brace the wife for 2021 purchases. LOL

Is this a details coin because of the scratches on the right arm through the N & G or is it mint state or??? I'm trying to further my education, thoughts, comments and input appreciated. Sellers pictures. 1929sobv.jpg 1929srev.jpg
