You rarely see rainbows like this

    The colors themselves are amazing. The toning patterns, on the other hand, I find less than ideal.

    Very ugly in my opinion. Toning is fine but if you can't recognize the coin it is too much.

    I think perhaps that sooner or later people will learn the storage conditions to consistently produce market-desirable toning and then the bottom will drop out of the market for coins which are not actually rare for a given type and condition.

    That being said, I've never really seen the appeal of banded toning. In silicon wafer processing, we were always trying to do the reverse and get films as uniform in thickness as possible. If you see bands like that it means something has gone dreadfully wrong! So maybe I'm just prejudiced.

    I prefer toning that does not distract from the detail of the coin. But, is this toning? 1899 IHC.jpg

    I have no experience with that series, so I don't know how they normally tone, but that first one sure doesn't look natural to me. It does match the PCGS TrueView, though.

    It's not for me. I think it looks a bit artificial, and the problem with that is even if it is natural it doesn't appeal.
