France: Napoleon I, “The Hundred Days”, 5 Francs, Paris mint, 1815A, KM#694.7 (24.9 g) Napoleon's historic “Hundred Days” issue. Issued during his brief second reign after his escape from Elba until his defeat at Waterloo. While the condition is far from ideal, I had been looking for a relatively affordable example for quite some time. Obverse: Laureate head right. NAPOLEON EMPEREUR. Tr=Pierre-Joseph Tiolier, engraver-general from March-April 1803 to 11th September 1816. BRENET=Nicolas-Guy-Antoine Brenet, engraver of the Paris mint. Reverse: EMPIRE FRANCAIS. Denomination within wreath. A=mint mark for Paris.
Nice example, I have a few Napoleonic coins as it was such an important period of history. The other 'hundred days' denominations are the 1815A 2 Francs (my avatar!) and the 20 Francs - example from the Lille mint.
Interesting period of history indeed. I don't have a 100 days Napoleon, but here is Louis XVIII 5 francs from the "First Restoration" - just after Elba and just before Napoleon's 100 days. After Louis was restored for the second time, the type was changed, so these were only issued for 2 years. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces2110.html This one is from the Perpignan Mint - scruffy but only paid a bit over $20 for it:
Lucky, definitely a Napoleon type I would like to own. I am happy with my current though. Napoleon Bonaparte (1804-1814) France AR 5 Francs O: Head right. R: Value in wreath, date below. Bayonne Mint 36mm 25g Badoury 583. Dav. 84 Rare Mint for this Date
Nice coin, I do not have any from Louis XVIII. As the mint mark is M on your coin it is from Toulouse, Perpignan is mint mark Q, although the mintage is almost double the value is about the same. I am trying to get a coin from each mint but still have a way to go . The mint marks are:- A: Paris B: Rouen BB: Strasbourg CL: Genoa D: Lyon G: Geneve H: La Rochelle I: Limoges K: Bordeux L: Bayonne M: Toulouse MA: Marseille Q: Perpignan T: Nantes U: Turin W: Lille Flag: Utrech CrownR: Rome
Oops. I should look at my own photos. I think I have another one of these first restorations with a hole in it - that one might be a "Q."
