I think this is one of my new "favorite" coins...

Just pulled out my Susan B Anthony set (in progress) to show my wife (she mentioned winning a debate in grade school while portraying SBA) and thought, "I'm a bit bored, and I think I've read enough news today for the rest of the year, why don't I image the nicest SBA in my set?"

Here are the results (took five sets of images, IMO this is the best):

    1981 D Susan B Anthony Dollar

    1981 D SBA Dollar 3.jpg

Wish I could find myself another set similar to the one I bought this in (for 2x face value, I believe) that had really nice, toned examples of the dates/mm I'm missing. SBA dollars seem like one of those US coin series where "nobody seems to want to collect them, or ever asks for them, LCS don't even want to buy them, but when you try to buy them from most LCS they pull out the Red Book and try to charge you full retail."

Hell, I've gotten better deals on gem plus Jefferson Nickels (which I also collect) relatively compared to SBA dollars. I don't understand it.

Anyway...thought I'd share a gorgeous coin tonight. Thanks for viewing, and stay safe out there.

I don't remember ever seeing toned SBA's. Do you know what conditions led to this particular toning?

    I have defined a complete set of SBA's as 18 coins total. 6 proofs and 12 non-proofs. I have a complete set.

I just realized - was there ever a silver SBA? I'll have to go look it up!

No, there was never a silver SBA. You're good.

I believe they were in a DANSCO album - but quite honestly, I don't exactly remember much except that they were all toned (the 1999 P and D almost like this one, but not anywhere near as lustrous) and how much I paid. From the dates on my other pictures of the other coins (looks like I made an attempt when I bought the album) looks like April 2019.

And I'm sure I technically have a complete set - I have a bunch of those 3-coin gift shop sets still in the OGP (bought for like $1 over face) but I've decided to put together a really nice set. So I'll have to go through all those sets and see if any are up to the task.

Of course...I'd probably prefer to put together a nice TONED set now that I have a good start, and those gift shop sets haven't toned at all. So I'll have to find a coin shop that has some more at similar prices, because half the fun is knowing that you got them for 2x face value or less.

I absolutely hate the SBA dollar design but this one is a stunner. It's the perfect coin for a type set.

The toning looks original; almost exactly like my type set Ike dollar (which toned in a basement slab). This is a great start especially if you're looking to make a toner type set.

Basement slabs and albums can tone clad like that. Especially since this coin has existed for 40+ years.

A silver SBA would have been interesting.

My 12 clad non-proofs are in a Dansco. No toning yet (which I prefer). I have a bunch of duplicate non-proofs in various uncirculated and souvenir sets as well.

My Dad must have liked SBAs. He left us with about 20 which my brother and I divided. My brother put all of his coins in a box in his closet and never looks at them. I have put all of my in protective covers and go through them every day. Am I crazy or is this a common ailment of coin collectors?

No, I think that's really normal to stash stuff away. Rainy day comes, time to bust them out and take a look.

On a side note, this is why I enjoy taking nice images of my coins - I get to look at them and enjoy them - without having to dig them out of wherever I have them hidden. :)

I am not a fan of toned coins but your SBA is nice looking.

Mind you, this is just my definition of an Ike collection...24 business strikes, 11 proof strikes...

One of the possibilities for the lack of collectability is the lack of a silver coin, in my opinion. Not many anomalies and/or errors also. I have gathered two complete sets of SBA's, one for each granddaughter. Thank you for the post.

I think that plays into it, absolutely, along with the design (which I don't really have too much of a problem with.)

I also feel like the size (too close to a quarter) makes it a bit confusing for people.

And I think they'd prefer to use dollar bills in their wallet vs. a pocket full of heavy change (regardless whether it's more cost-effective to have a coin that lasts a couple hundred years vs. a paper bill that won't come anywhere near that.)

And I think there are other reasons (subject matter) that potentially causes a sizable percentage of the collecting community to avoid the series.

I think the main problem was with the size almost the same as a quarter. I stile get a few in change, even now. The idea of the flat edges was good when they talked about it be for it was minted. The round edge made it bad.

The major problems with the coin was it looked and felt like a quarter Before it was minted the mint talked about the flat edges would make a difference, but when it was minted they kept the round edge and put the flat design in side of a round coin. I still get one or two in change, even now.
