I received this dollar as change about 15 years ago. It has sharp ink, blue/red threads, and the paper feels ok. I took it to a few coin shops. 1 guy said that it may be a bad batch of currency paper. Has anyone seen anything like this before? 1 store owner offered me $1000 to take it off my hands. Should I take his offer or hold onto it?

It's just a novelty item--if you soak a bill in the right chemical solution, it'll make the cotton fibers contract, and the bill shrinks like this (making the paper get just a little thicker). I don't know exactly what chemical is involved, but Google could probably tell you.

As such, the bill isn't worth any premium; and you might even have trouble convincing your bank that it's worth face value, though it still should be.

    yes, but...

The chemical is Anhydrous Ammonia and it needs to be at least -28 degrees. I was told over time the corners will round-out and the edges will all concave and as the ammonia "leeches out" it will go back to it's original size, some what.

Run, don't walk, to his shop. If he pays by check, take it to his bank and cash it before he wakes up!

Check out this link for more details on how to do it.

Thanks, and I probably will. He offered store credit.

Numbers said clear as day that it is a novelty item without much of any premium and here the last two posters are advocating fraud. As far as I am concerned you trading in or selling this bill to this dealer is no different than knowingly selling a counterfeit bill or coin. I sure hope that if you do decide to sell or trade it in that you explain that it is post-BEP and was done by chemically treating the note. Then the trade/sale would be legal and ethical. If you play along that it was printed like that or is some big error when you now know it not to be than a crime will have been committed upon completion of the sale or trade, possibly a felony!

oh hog wash. There is no law that says you can not sell a fake item as long as both parties know about the item being fake...this item was treated, and as long as the buyer is made known of this fact then the seller has no wrong doing on his account.

If I was in his shoes, I would sell the note ASAP for that price.

Please feel free to read my entire preceding post again. Yes as I said, as long as the dealer is told it is fine and ethical. With that said why would the dealer still be willing to pay $1,000 for a note that he now knows has been chemically treated and is not a rare error? The OP will undoubtedly not say a word. Furthermore I guess that this is just me but I could not in good conscience accept $1,000 for something that was most-likely done as a gimmick or as a novelty that anyone can do with a little knowledge regardless if the buyer knows or not. I would see it as taking heavy advantage of a situation.

I give the three posters credit though, while the three all disappoint me I do admire the blunt honesty on here from them atleast admitting that they would sell/trade the note for 990xs what it would otherwise be worth.

btw: It's not a crime at all to sell that dollar for $1000 as long as it's not misrepresented. And 'not misrepresented' doesn't necessarily mean offering information that's not specifically asked for.

ice Just happy to be here

It's not a counterfeit bill it's a real bill that was treated. If a dealer offers a 1000 for a bill and you sell it to him you did nothing wrong. A wise dealer would know the bill is a chemically treated bill or he won't be in business very long. I'm sure when he offered $1000 to take the bill off your hands he was looking for a great deal in a genuine error. I have a couple of coins I got years ago and I now know the dealer took advantage of my lack of knowledge to make money. I'm not bitter about it but I am somewhat skeptical of what I am now buying. The dealer will learn the same lesson many here have learned about buying and selling coins do your homework. Ice

Well, it's not counterfeit since it is an actual $1 bill. There is no fraud involved. So, if you had, say, a BU Barber Half Dollar and a dealer offered you $1000 for it, you'd refuse and only accept 50 cents for it?

I would sell that bill for a thousand to that person in a heartbeat... But I have already been accused of being morally bankrupt by the 'high horse' crowd ;)

This is not a mint BU 1898O Barber Half Dollar, this is some gag that Joe did in his kitchen twenty years ago. The OP hasn't posted again, I am sure he has run off high and mighty with what he did, probably went out to buy a bottle of fine Cognac to celebrate.

Now I will conclude by saying shame on almost ALL of you. You almost ALL disappoint me. I guess that I was just raised better than the lot of you*, perhaps this is because I went to a private school when I was younger. Kids who come from private grade schools are just different, come out having more morals and ethics--what more can I say? I went to public school for years as well and the contrast of quality of people shows big time on here in this thread.

*Except perhaps Numbers, FreakyGarrettc and Troodon.

I went to a private school as well and also went to a public school for a few years and if you ask me, the person here showing the least 'quality' as far as education and morals goes is YOU. I think the time has long passed for you to get off your high horse and quit being so judgmental. You were not necessarily raised better than anyone else here and you are quite frankly, making yourself look a bit silly.

Dursin, now you are taking things too far. Please refrain from attacking me personally(such as saying 'YOU' directly to me). As I stated, I am done replying in this thread, please let it go---this thread has run its course. If you really went to public and private schools as I have, than I feel that you would be in better understanding of where I am coming from. I am so disappointed by the activity on this thread that I will be taking a break from visiting this Paper Money forum and especially from posting(I'm sure some will now post how happy they are about that, or atleast think it).

Yes, times have changed and for the worse unfortunately. Maybe so many people advocated taking advantage of someone because of the economy and feel the need to make as much money any way that they can, I just don't know.
