I have purchased this set because of the beautiful toning. Not knowing the history behind the 1964 no mint SMS coins. I am fairly new to collecting and I am learning everyday. Now, I do not think this set is the SMS set. I can only find one other set with the same year but that set had a Denver mint mark. It didn't have the seal/sticker either. I am looking for any information. Should I have them graded? Would it be better to separate the coins or keep them in the set? Thanks for reading.
Can you explain why you say that? Not that I don't believe you. I just want more information, in order to learn. Thank you for your response.
The US Mint never produced anything like that. It was put together by another company, just not by the Mint. It's a very nice looking set and would good in anyone's collection.
It is/was a commercially available aftermarket holder that somebody but the coins into. The coins could have come from circulation, bank rolls, or even a cut up mint set. There is no way to know the source of the coins, but the coins/holder areNOT any form of official set. That is what "put together" means.
Here is what a 1964 Proof set from the Philadelphia (no mint mark) in original government packaging, would look like. There was also an Uncirculated set that would be in similar packaging. As has been stated, your coins were either taken out of mint packaging or taken out of circulation and but in an after market holder. I would either take it out of that and put the coins in 2 x 2's or leave it as is.
Thank you all for the wonderful information. I quite enjoyed learning something from this. Reguardless I still plan on keeping the set. But now, to me, I have an interesting topic about them. Again Thank you all.
