Hey Guys, I'm looking into getting into coin collecting. I think I'll start by slowly collecting all the presidential dollars as they come out over the years. Just poking around on ebay, I found this for 2007: http://cgi.ebay.com/2007-Presidential-Uncirculated-Dollar-Coin-Set-UNOPENED_W0QQitemZ250381088089QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item250381088089&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318 Is that like THE set to buy? I'm wondering if it's best to buy Satin or Proof, or if they're the same. Looking for the best value of coin, as I'm looking for a long term collection (20+ years). Sorry I'm new at this, I'm sure these are newbie questions. Thanks!
First welcome to the forum AND hobby! Newbie questions? We were all and still are in many aspects newbies. Collect what YOU like is the first rule. Do your homework. This is where CoinTalk can come in VERY handy - don't feel afraid to ask "newbie" questions as many here are more than willing to help. Finally ENJOY! clembo
I think your first purchase should be a copy of the Red Book (Guide Book of US Coins by Yeoman). If you read it you will learn a LOT about coins and will be able to narrow your interests.
The way I collect the prez dollars is to just get them at my bank. I know a lot of people that collect the proof sets too. Welcome to the forum.
Well - just my personal opinion - I would collect them from the bank if you are just getting started. Even before doing that you might want to pick up a few books to see what might really interest. As for proof or satin - that is easy - what do YOU like? Again me personally - I have several pocket change collection harris album collections - cents, nickels, dimes quarters and pres dollars. I find this fun and challenging to complete from pocket change. I recommend coin collecting as a fun hobby but not any type of investment. Welcome - enjoy - have fun.
