Thought I'd share one more GTG today, one of my two 1921 high relief Peace dollars -- This particular coin was a birthday gift back in 2011 and was prominently featured in my 20th Century Type set. I had a chance to upgrade the '21 Peace in my type set last year (old GTG thread), but due to the sentimental value of this coin, I of course couldn't get rid of it. Instead, I'd sent it back PCGS for reholder and TrueView It was previously housed in an older generation holder and I was certain it would upgrade...
In 1921, and very briefly in 1922, Peace dollars were struck in high relief. However, the US Mint found that this deteriorated the dies far too quickly and slowed down the production line substantially. In 1921, trial "medium" relief dollars were struck, but these too proved to share the same challenges. Ultimately, the mint altered the design and lowered the relief in 1922 for the remainder of the run. I wonder if the 1964 Peace dollar would've been high relief? Surely the technology at the mint had improved by then. If the 2021 Peace dollars weren't doomed, it would've been neat to see them in high relief as well.
Were the coins concave with basined fields, like the 1907 High Relief Saints ? The Peace Dollar devices look a bit elevated but I don't see any concavity.
AU-50; if I remember correctly, this issue was often lacking in detail compared to the 1922-1935 issues.
XF 45. 1921's were notorious for not striking up that well in the hairlines over Liberty's ear. Sometimes that is mistaken for wear. There is some wear there, though, and elsewhere.
