Several years ago an old family friend passed away and left me several coins.
One is an 1891cc Morgan that my local coin dealer estimated to be in XF condition. The coin has an interesting pinkish tone or hue especially on the reverse side.Redbook lists it at 95$ in EF-40.
I'm considering doing one of three things with it.
1.send it in to NGC or PCGS for grading
2.possibly selling or trading it,to purchase other coins.
3.just hold on to it and track prices.
Being that it's my only cc Morgan, and is a remembrance of the previous owner i'll more than likely hang onto it.
if i do decide to have it certified,I was just wondering how the toning might effect the grade or if it's even worth paying to have it graded at this point.
The mintage is only 1.6 million and it goes for 1000$ in MS-63.
Has anyone out there seen any pinked toned morgans before?
    check it out

Really nice coin. Although I am not a fan of toning, I can appreciate it and do like some coins. I especially like the obverse of this coin. At the last coin show I went to here in Sacramento CA, it seemed like toning coins were taking over. I saw a lot of rainbow and solid greens but no pinks. I would bet that you you get some nice offers at a coin show. It wouldn't hurt to let them offer, just to see what the market would bear.

now I'm no expert but the "toning" on the front looks like something that was spilled on the coin..it doesn't look like toning...I maybe wrong.

It is not toning of the silver. It is toning of the dip used to clean it. Itwas dipped forto long and not rinsed. Just dried off. Classic example of why you dont dip or clean coins. What you do to it now maybe what ruins it tomorrow. The luster is completely stripped off the surface and would get bagged if you submit it.

I have seen coins toned that color - naturally toned. I have also seen dipped coins toned that color. So it's hard to say based on the pics. But I'll ask a question - are those pics or are they scans ? Scanners can destroy luster. Does the coin have luster that shows through the toning if tilted in the light ?

If it does - it may be natural toning. And if you submitted it - it might just come back as AU ;)

If you look at the surfaces between the devices you can see some of the splotchiness from a dipping experience. That is part of why I believe it has been dipped. I have never seen a coin tone the same color across the surfaces of both sides either.

You may well be right whoopig - I can't say one way or the other. But there are naturally toned coins with fairly consistent toning on both sides. And when that happens - in most cases it will be toning like this or of a darker color.

Just posting my opinion. With the price of CC morgans, greed will get to some people. I just would be more surprised if it is natural than dipped.

That's interesting i always assumed it was toning and never considered that i t may have been dipped or cleaned.
My local coin shop guy seems trustworthy and has had his shop for 20yrs plus, so i value his opinion.
As i said ,he graded it at XF and called it a nice coin but never mentioned the possibility of cleaning.
I'm going to have him take another look at it and may also bring it to the ANA convention here in SF next month.
Hope you guy's are wrong about the cleaning, but even if your not at least
it didn't cost me any $$.

We are only going by a pic. In hand is always best. If you get a couple in hand opinions that are apart from us then throw our rantings out the window.

GDPMSP-The pics are scans and yes a little bit of luster does peek thru in places.

I kind of thought they were scans. As whoopig says - an in hand exam is exponentially better than judging pics. But I'll stick by my guesstimate based on details that the coin would go AU - if slabbed ;)

It's very hard to tell from the photos, grade or toning so I would not venture a guess at this point. Silver Surfer can you take some photos under natural light ( sun light ) and in focus...?

The grade looks better then XF-40 in the photo but again hard to tell. some dealers low ball the grade, not to say yours is but might be worth posting better photos for the guys to look at to make a better judgment...

    The difference between a XF-40 and a MS-60 is about $260.00

I have several Morgan's that are generally toned one predominate color on both sides but other colors are in the mix. If it's just pink and no other colors it very well could be as Whoopig suggests...
