I just received one from ebay, one of the first coins i got. SSOOO I don't know how to judge it. It doesn't look to good --looks slightly sandblasted to me. Is there suppose to be much detail in Georges hair or on the eagle , the bottom wings are their , but not much. i wont comment any further on this coin until i knoiw more about grading washingtons you talk about getting a learning experiece I would definitely tell a newbie to do a lot of more research than i have before purchasing coins I do appreciate the replys i have gotten here , it might decise whether i stay or leave the coin collecting phase Dan
Here is a photo of a 1942-S Washington PCGS graded MS-65. I could not find a 44 example on hand. But the grading principles will still apply.
Coin Collecting will always be a learning experience. No one can know it all. That is one of the most fascinating aspects of it. I have been doing this for number of years now, and I still learn new things. Grading is by far the toughest part of the coin hobby. It is going to remain subjective. Everyone will see the coin in a different way. We are all here to help. Pick our brains. We all enjoy talking coins, and learning more about them.
Nd That scan doesnt show very good Is there a link i can go to that would show this coin in ms condition ,something like the morgan dollar grading link
I forgot, this coin was advertized as a Gem MS68 Its shiny enough Are the eagles wing not as detailed as a 1943 half dollar not a lot of hair detail either
Sir; I far as I can find between the top two grading firms only a small handful of 1944 washington quarters have graded at MS-68. At that level, the details on the coin would be superb. I will look around the internet to see if I can find a few grading photos of Washington quarters. Was this coin sold raw? Here is a link to another thread here on coin talk that describes posting photos. http://cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=863
I have found what a MS-68 Washington quarter should look like. This particular dealer is well known for his finest known coins. http://www.ricoins.com/librarypages/1944wa68(s)w279832-013.htm I hope this helps.
I have a 1997 circulated i found laying around that has better detail than this one, if you can compare the two.
bigelk - There are some things you need to know about grading coins. You can't really compare a coin from 1997 to one from 1944. In fact there are times when you can't even compare 2 coins from 1944 if they are from different mints. Each coin from each year and from each mint may need to be graded by a slightly different standard. That is not always the case - but it is often. I might suggest that you visit a bookstore or use ebay, Amazon - any on-line seller and buy yourself a copy of the ANA Grading Standards. But until you do - perhaps you can start here - How To Grade US Coins
