Truly Stunning, Exceptional Toning, clean hole, and Mint State Details. 40$ I simply could NOT refuse, and I am ecstatic. What do you guys think this would grade if it did not have the hole! And what would you pay for it! HiHJDBW.jpg l9tFuea.jpg lQcfwLh.jpg N9nCfrp.jpg PoR6wMB.jpg 6RpSvL3.jpg

Yea , I don't know why someone would drill such a nice coin unless it was to hide it from thieves by wearing it . ;)

The Hole is old, and surprisingly clean. Most holed coins pickup distortions in the field around the hole or corrosion in the hole. Generally not something I would buy, but at 40$ for MS details, I can not complain!

I like your coin, and am glad you are happy with both it and the price.

I think holed coins are a nice way to pick up a coin which would otherwise be out of my impulse buy price range, or a coin that is scarce enough that I would feel bad passing it up for fear that I won't ever see one again. But as an investment, I imagine a holed coin would be harder to sell than a comparably priced intact coin in a lower grade. I like coins which have seen some history, so I usually don't mind an otherwise attractive coin which was holed or jewelry mounted or even made into a love token.

    Some examples:
Salzburg 1/4 Thaler 1642 klippe, holed, jewelry mounted and plated Salzburg 1:4 Thaler 1642 klippe copy.jpeg

    1913 Prussia 2 mark, pin

Colombia 1821 8 reales, MDQ (Moneda de Quito) countermark and holed

Queen Anne Shilling 1711, Love Token

If I'd waited for a "clean" version of any of those coins to cross my path, I'd probably have to wait a long time and pay a lot more. But I'm more of a world coins than US collector. The US has a shorter history, so for all but the scarcest types I feel like there's an intact copy out there somewhere if you are willing to pay a market price for it.

(And since this is the US forum, here are a few US love tokens mixed in as well)

This one is my favorite, I do not think the holes impact IMG_4762 (2).JPG the beauty. IMG_4761 (2).JPG

  12. Some medals or tokens come only with a hole or a hanger molded on. For me I don't want a holed coin no matter how pretty. If I'm going to spend money I don't want to invest in a holed item. Its a definite minus in passing on to someone else. However if anyone wants to collect them good luck for them. I'll wait to find one that is not mutilated. Every time I would look at it, I would look right at that hole.

Love tokens are another part of the market. You have to expect a hole or two or solder to hold the bracelet. Holes are okay for those pieces.

Holes in regular coins is another matter for me. I don't buy them.

I do buy political tokens with holes because, once more, it is something that is to be expected if someone was going to wear the piece like a modern political button.

Even there, the hole can be in the wrong place. For example almost all of the know examples of this 1864 Lincoln piece, which also a Civil War token, are holed.

On the other hand, this Hard Times token is collected without the hole, which why I bought this piece dirt cheap for less than $100. It is a very neat Jackson token design. Without the hole it's worth $400 or more. It seems like collectors filled in the holes with plaster, which is what has been done to this piece.

A very nice looking XF details quarter. I like holed coins and coin jewelry. Not so much ex-jewelry. I have some of each.

Nice coin, hole or no hole. Doesn't look like it was ever actually used as jewelry, but just holed and left as is.
