Found this on a 1987 Penny. The 9 is not just filled in, but lumped over. Is this the result of a die break?
Looks like there's one on the back too, running from the NW corner of the monument through the E in UNITED all the way to the rim.
Yes it is a Die Break. Most commonly known as a Die Chip. The issue in the Reverse is a Die Crack. Nice one.. Congrats!
Yeppers... die breaks are somewhat common, but still fun to find and it shows you are actually looking at coins. WRT the digits, the hole is mirror-imaged on the die, so it's a small post or in the case of the open 9 a little blob-like an island. And they break off. Not cleanly, which makes it an even better find.
I am definitely looking, and doing as much research as I know how to do before I post anything. I want to learn how to effectively do this hobby bad, since it gives me something to do that isn't sit in front of the tv and play video games lol so all the input here is super helpful
