It is a nice coin, low grade, BUT has an area of red oxidation as can be seen. The date is very faint but discernible. The planchet is thin, no pole to bust. I would be very greatful for attribution help please. Thanks, Eduard
It's a C6-a/b. :eat: Weigh it and I should be able to tell be able to tell which one. Love it! :thumb: Ribbit Ps: The leaf tip at the I in AMERICA is what gives this one away.
I just got a C6a a couple of weeks ago! It's not as nice as yours, though. Mine has a planchet crack that I rather like.
Guys, thanks a lot! That is why a like this forum so much. Always help and guidance when you need it. My CQR (great guide to US Copper!) says C-6a is R-2 and thin planchet with berry at bow. The C-6b is R-6! with thick planchet. So mine is probably C-6a, but i will weight when i get the chance. Once again, thanks! Eduard
The 6-b was struck over cut down cent planchets, which were thicker, thus, the weight is everything on this variety. I also have a 6-a that isn't as nice as yours and it is the only LCHC I have and I cherish it. :thumb: Mine weighs 4.4 grams but it was a ground find so it lost a lot of weight to corrosion. When I got it in, I spent a lot of time attributing it, since the date isn't easily readable (catch it in the right light and know what you are looking for) so when I saw yours, the first thing I did was look for the leaf tip at the I, to see if it was a C-6, since that's the only LCHC with a leaf tip at the I, and there it was. :kewl: That made it easy for me to attribute. Ribbit
Thanks very much H.T for the description of the C-6b. I would be cool to have one of those so compact and thick. I really like this coin because it has nice, smooth surfaces and a nice portrait; were it not for that spot of red corrosion....The corrosion seems inactive though, as i've had it for more than 25 years and still looks the same. Eduard
Hello Mark, i know you and a few other here enjoy and love early copper. For example H.T, Catbert, Borgovan, Leadfoot, Kanga, 900fine, and a few others. But definitely still a minority of the C.Ters. I really love these coins and would like to see more from the members.... so post away anything you have! Regards, Eduard
Eduard, That is a smokin Half cent. i want one of these soo bad, one day I'll have to break down and get one. My only old copper is a 1806 half cent and believe me I love it. I don't regularly comment on the old copper as I usually have nothing to comment other then "NICE COIN MAN". So I just keep it to myself. But I read all the posts from you, H.T, MarkH, and the rest of the copper posse. Keep it up I love it
LOVE the obverse, nice and clean-looking, shame about the corrosion on the reverse. I don't have any of the 1795s yet, just '94 C1a and C3a as well as '97 C1. The liberty caps are hard to find, and finding a nice-looking one is a royal pain. None of mine count as nice-looking, by the way.
Fish, according to my CQR that 1794 C-3a should be a R-5. A rare one, pricey in all grades. maybe you can show it to us one day. Snaz, i hope you find one soon that you like! They are out there. I look regularly on Ebay and have had some luck there. Good luck in your search! Eduard
You subscribe to the CQR? I still need to and will one of these days. :goofer: I would have already but it is so hard for me to spend money on anything non-coin related. Ribbit Ps: What's the CQR say about a 1798 S-146? I just picked one up last week and was wondering what the rarity is now (was R-5). :high5: Pps: I just picked up a S-150 too. That's 2 hard to get 1798's I've picked up in the last week. :goofer:
H.T, the S-146 is listed in the 19th edition of CQR as 5- (low 5), while the S-150 is a 5. Prices in Average condition are: AG3 GD5 VG8 F12 S-146: 175 500 1500 2000 S-150: 150 500 1250 - Both are rare coins! Congratulations. Eduard
I picked up a S-147 also. I'm on a roll! It's taken so long to start filling holes in the 1798 portion of my collection and those 3 recent acquistions have put me on top of the world. Ribbit Ps: Thanks for the CQR info! :thumb:
Eduard, It is always a pleasure to see your' nice coins! Thanks for sharing! I wish that I had the time and money to invest in the Early Copper coins and the references books needed for attribution. Maybe one of these days it will happen! Frank
I agree with Mike: we wanna see pics!!! Congratulations on that S-238, R 4. PS-i want to know why you are picking up all those rare 1798s, and i am missing out on them. just kiddin, i am not a 1798 guy, my year is 1796 (and 1794 and 1795). Eduard
I just picked up a spare S-238 tonight. I figure you can't have enough R-4/5 DBC's. I'll keep the better one and use the other for trade or sell it. The only one that's come in is the 1798 S-146, the others are stuck in the snail mail. :goofer: Ribbit Ps: I also recently acquired a 1786 M17-K New Jersey Cent and a 1788 M7-E Connecticut. That makes it 11 of 37 I now have of the 1788's, with 1 R-2, 2 R-3's, 2 R-4's, 3 R-5's, and 4 R-6's (that's 12 total but I have a double of M12.2-E).
