I picked up these two coins at the Nevada IA coin show over the weekend. I finally got a gold dollar, an 1887, mintage of 7500, and another addition to the III cent nickel collection, 1879 38,000 mintage. Soory about the poor image quality. I was going to get pics at the show, but alas, I for got. Oops.
Way to go Viper ! Try to get a better pic of that $1 and run it by Hobo........... How was the show attendance? What seemed to move vs sit in cases? Did you see many collectors with want lists out running thru boxes or binders? In other words, it;s time for your 1st show report
Thanks everyone. I have been wanting a gold dollar for some time now, and to get one with a lower mintage is a bonus. As for as the show goes, I wasn't able to stay long, but when I got there it was very busy I thought. It seamed like people were buying, and I saw at least one gent that wasn't afraid to spend some money. I did notice people going through the binders looking for coins they needed. A freind that I caught up to at the show was binder hunting looking for jeffersons, Phillipine coins and his favorite sport which is cherry-picking shield nickels. I haven't talked to him since the show to see how he made out on the shields yet. I wish I could have stayed at the show longer, but I had to rush off to My daughter,s bowling tourny.
And a pretty good strike, too. On the earlier dates, even MS coins can lack the letters in LIBERTY or some of the date. Yep, gold $1s are cool.
Well above average strike on that nickel 3-cent coin. From your image it looks like the "III" is fully struck. Hard to find them that way.
I try and find the fully struck III, the hard part is a full stike with the early die state. The depth of the details isn't as good as I would like, but with a relatively low mintage I won't complain.
I just thought of something I noticed different this year after reading a thread on show security. The exibit hall has three entrances and in the past they have all been open. This year only one way in and one way out. If I remember correct, last year there were some items stolen which might explain the change. It's really sad that people have to resort to theft like that.
I can deal with the dark color of the 3CN with the minimal amount of wear. I was able to pick it up for about the price of a vf coin and I think it is above that.
