Hello everyone, I have been lurking, and I found your information and links on PVC cases extremely useful. I'm a 17 year old Michigan boy, and I like to metal detect and CRH paper and coin. I have accumulated, as well as inherited, some very nice examples. I found out here my cases were unsafe and I have now re-cased them all. However, in my research, I was unable to find out if I stored the cases in direct contact with, lets say PVC or acid paper, would the chemicals leach through? Any links? I ask because I have old newspapers and book pages in frames I don't think are safe. Thanks Thanks -GC
Welcome Goldencoin from a fellow Michigan member. Stick around here and you can learn alot. I don't think anything leach through from the PVC or acid paper especially if it has been a while since you did it and nothing has happened. I know nothing about old newspapers or books but the coins should be ok. You could always put them in distilled water for a hr or so then pat dry. Welcome aboard.
Welcome any PVC is essentially bad. Now, if you have the PVC wrapped with a safe, inert material... will the chemicals leech fromt he PVC into or onto the secondary inert material and then onto your collectibles?? Im not sure. But considering the history of PVc... i just wouldnt trust it.. but thats just my opinion As for old newspapers... well, from what i can tell you that i have found through searching and talking with folks.. most paper items, and i would assume newspapers would be included, have acids built into the paper (for whatever reason.. i dont have the exact reasons). I am unsure, but i think its those acids which turn paper brown and brittle over time. That point i have note seen written anywhere, so i could be off base. But i wouldnt trust newspaper as a storage medium. good luck
Hi welcome to CoinTalk, I would avoid PVC at all costs, it is not a good thing to have round your paper.
Welcome to CoinTalk. PVC= No No MYLAR, POLYPROPYLENE= Yes Yes Foodsaver material is poly. and you can vacuum seal your coins with it if you want long safe storage. If you like toned coins try a brown paper bag or brown paper envelope and a few years of waiting and hoping. Good Question.
