It is like watching the Antique Roadshow where people pay $50 for something that ends up worth $5,000. ...or the story of a person buying a picture for the frame and under it was an authentic signed copy of the Declaration of Independence. I would be interested to see the dates of the $10 in coins.

It is amazing what you can find in old furniture! Aside from stashes such as the one described, it is not at all unusual to find high grade coins inside of antique couches. The coins, and a variety of other materials, find their way from pockets down into the couches where they remain for in some cases, well over one hundred years! A short funny story... I purchased a circa 1840-1850 Empire Style sofa (monster of a couch) from Philadelphia. It was a gorgeous piece, a late empire style with a little bit of encroaching Victorian embellishment - manufactured in Philadelphia. And, it was in very nice condition and had not been redone since probably 1900-1920 or so. I owned the sofa for probably four or five years and it sat in my living room. While moving furniture one day I busted the leg. I flipped the couch over to make a repair (which as it turns out was not the first repair on the leg of a couch that had seen over 150 years of use!) and I noticed what appeared to be baseball cards inside the couch! I must have agonized over whether or not to tear open the bottom of the couch for all of about, hmmm..., maybe 2 seconds. I busted it open (in a kind fashion of course) and if memory serves me right I pulled out maybe five or six baseball cards. All of which were over 50 years old. None turned out to be terribly valuable, and I wish I had written down the players name, but it was an exciting moment that I enjoyed sharing with my son at the time!
