Finally went to the main coin shop here where I just moved in Sept. My wife bought all the current state quarters in UNC. for $18. I got a 1940 10 pfennig (w/nazi symbol) (VF), a 1936 Buffalo nickle (XF) and a 1898 Barber dime (vg/f) all for $5 I didnt have any bufallo nickles so it was exciting to see one in such great shape for the price. It still amazes me tho that he doesnt keep a few Gold eagles on hand.
My dealer for a long time never would buy much gold...and when he would it would go fast....then he inlarged his shop...changed it around and now about every time has 20-30+ pieces of gold....your dealer might not have enough money to have some tied up in gold coins right now.... Sounds like you had some fun!!! Speedy
what was really exciting was I have been buying older coins to stirke an interest out of my honey for coins, figuring since shes such a history buff, that seeing these little pieces of history would draw her into collecting. but shes held me at bay for some time now. she started going thru her change and keeping all the different state quarters a few weeks ago tho. ....just out of interest So she was only missing Texas,I think, but she really likes to show them off and look at them. I took her with me to the coin store and while we were there I ''casually'' asked him about the state quarters. Hes got the 32 that are out in UNC for $18.. So we left with my coins. Later on shes looking thru hers again and I hinted around about going back and just trading hers plus the extra $10 for the UNC and buying some 2X2s and putting them into the coin binder. She about jumped out of her seat and headed for the car. It was nice to see that she got excited about coins. She was asking why she doesnt have an interest in the old ones I like, but only the new ones. I told her from what I can tell everyone has a different interest for some reason, its a personal thing. so now shes counting the days till the next quarter comes out. Anyone have any suggestions on any other newer coins we could collect without going broke? she likes variety and ''shiny'', it doesnt have to be anything too grand.
I told her about the euros, but she kinda shrugged. I think she does like the nickles tho. I was hoping to try stamps or soemthing. There is a lot more variety it seems and some of them are like little works of art. I might order like a grabbag of world stamps and see if she takes a liking to it.
I know a few guys that collect stamps...some collect stamps with coins on the stamps...(in the "photo" on the stamp). I'd better not get off topic but I could go on about stamps!! Speedy
They had a proof set in the coin shop from one of the years. I showed it to her, but she didnt seem too interested. Id be willing to bet that over time tho that she starts to want them in better condition. These she has are UNC. but far from perfect. Ive tried to explain to her about how condition greatly affects value. a perfect coin worth hundreds or thousands might be worth a few bucks once its worn enough. Possibly that will make her more interested in the proof sets or at least look to buying them in ms 69 -70 at some point. I think I will try to see if she wants to maybe start with either euros or possibly start collecting like the best specimen of each type of US coin we can find......say one ms 70 buffalo nickle, one ms70 mercury dime, and so on. Thanks for all the help and ideas guys
Ya Know, one of the things that has worked for me over the years is that Women do prepare for Birthdays and all Celebrations right? My 3 yr old son has friends and when he goes to a Birthday party I always have him give a Unic Silver American Eagle...I try to make it the Birth Year of that person..my wife loved the idea and now I have a 20 coin roll of every ASE to date..except the 1996 which I have only 10 of. It worked for me..so it may work for you. Good luck!!
Ya gotta love proofs since they are so beautiful but remember that these are made by a different process and aren't intended for circulation. Comparing their grades to unc is like comparing apples and oranges. Collectors should collect what they enjoy and past performance is no assurance of future results anyway, but historically nice uncs are much scarcer than nice proofs and command higher prices.
interesting. I didnt think of that. and not just silver eagles, but all those other rounds too. Ive seen some that are just fantastic to look at. and being silver, they have intrinsic value too great idea, thanks
