Hey guys, I got this awesome Numis coin Album for my birthday, but the pages have PVC in them and I'm afraid of ruining my coins. This could easily be taken care of... IF the rings inside were the regular size as most binders.
I hate to ask such a silly question but I've searched everywhere and I can't seem to find any pages to substitute. I think I may have to pick up a whole punch and just punch some new ones.
This is what it looks like:

does it smell like a new shower curtain? if so keep your coins away from it!

One option tho is to put your coins in non-pvc flips before putting them in the pockets... that should keep them safe. I wouldn't take the chance though.

Will the coins get affected by such pages if they contain PVC, even if they are in 2x2 holders? I think all my collection is stored like that. I mean, I don't know for sure if the plastic sheets have PVC, but I always thought the holders would protect them from it.

No No, nothings going int his binder until I can find some new pages. The pages it came with are PVC. I was just curious if anyone had the same binder and already dealt with the situation.

(I cut the rest as it didn't say anything about archival safe or refer to coin storage or pvc contents)

At $0.26/page for 25 you really cannot beat the price.

Woops, didn't realize you were looking for pages for a non-standard size binder.

I have just sent Lighthouse the manufacturers of the Numis range a email to ask them what the sheets are made from :D I need to know as well as this is a system I use LOL

When you buy Numis coin pages, they come in a plastic "wrapper" which has a pretty obvious PP mark. Unfortunately it is much less obvious whether that refers to the material of the wrapper (which is what I assume) or to the plastic pages inside ...

Leuchtturm does state that Numis pages are made from, quote, glasklares, weichmacherfreies Qualitätsmaterial. That is, glass clear (or crystal clear) material, free of softeners. May well mean that instead of "soft PVC" they use hard PVC. Now if they tell you that they use PP instead, that would be interesting. Please keep us informed. :)

For the life of me I can't figure out why any coin collector/holders are still made out of PVC. Do they WANT everyones coins to turn green? I still get raw coins in auctions in soft PVC flips, i can't get them out of there fast enough!

Very easy, and good reasons for it. The soft flips are cheaper, so that is what the dealers will buy. The soft flips are far less likely to scratch the coins when they are being put into the flips or taken out of them, so that is also why the dealers will buy them.

Dealers will always use the soft, PVC flips for these reasons. It will never change, nor should it. Collectors are supposed to know this and realize that when they buy a coin that the flip that it comes is only menat to be used a temporary holder and that they are to remove it as soon as they get home.

Now that (selling them in such flips) is fine with me. But when it comes to PVC, there still seem to be two "camps". Both say that soft PVC sheets should be avoided for long term storage - but some say that hard PVC is fine for coins, while others say that even that should be avoided.

I do have some coins in what I think are hard PVC sheets. But I tend to not use these for "better" coins; who knows ...

Anyone who sells an ALBUM with PVC in the pages, should be shot outright. No trial.

Around here we don't shoot that quickly :) but are you saying then that "hard or soft" makes no difference?

    Heh, heh. :)

I don't know enough about the chemistry behind one or the other to make that call. All I know is that there is a difference of opinion between some collectors, and that's good enough for me. I'd rather err on the side of caution, you know what I mean?

Now I have a dozen of those small Harris albums that smell like shower cutains that I have to figure out what to do with... *sigh*.

Not sure about all the fuss. For one thing just contact the manufacturer and request information as to the chemical forumlae for his products. Or just come out and ask if thier product contains PVC. They can not tell you it is PVC free in writting if not true. Lawsuit you know. Even via email, same thing. There are way to many people that just rant on about everything containing something without knowing what they are talking about. People have blurted out that Tupper Ware contains PVC. Same with Zip Lock bags. I've contacted the manufacturers and have it in writting that there products DO NOT CONTAIN PVC. Prior to running around bumping into walls, try contacting the manufacturer of any product you doubt.
Your product may contain Arsenic, Cyanide, Strychnine but maybe no PVC.
Also, why bother with those odd ringed folders. Whitman, Dansco and even that well loved Littleton makes Albums with normal looking ringed pages.
And if you hit the flea markets, Office Max, Office Depot, etc., you can buy a punch with adjustable hole makers and make all the pages out of anything you want. Buy those 3 ringed binder plastic sheets that hold 20-2x2's and add all the holes you want.
Another suggestion is to send all your coins to me and no more problems with albums. :goofer::eek:

Me, I'm just not that bright... I'd sooner just complain and yell at clouds. ;)

But seriously though, I've been sticking to the big brand name suppliers when it comes to my supplies, and while I'm sure some are fine, it's a bit disconcerting when your album arrives "smelling like the shower curtain" that everyone seems to make a fuss about.

Guess I'll HAVE to start doing my OWN homework... *grumble, grumble* Stupid clouds...

Not to brag about Whitman but one of the few things I like about them is their flexability. I can get a blank Album cover, blank pages, presson sheets of Gold looking letters/numbers and make my own Albums with what I want, how many I want, what goes in where, etc. For example I made an Album called Dimes. In it is Liberty Heads, Mercuy Dimes and Roosevelt Dimes in order by dates. I've made a Nickel Album with Liberty Head, Indian Heads, Jefferson Nickels. I've made Albums for just D and P coins, no Proofs. I've made Proof Albums, not D or P coins. I've created my own type of Type sets. With blank Album covers and pages you can make what ever you want.
I'm thinking about a complete Dime Album next starting with Bust types and going all the way to present. Of course that would mean a very large Album so might ignore proofs, no error coins and only one of each variety.

I had the same problem. I had some real kick_asz albums made by a German Company Lighthouse, where the coin was put into slider, and the slider was slid into a PVC laced page. Below link
I loved the thing, the album had gold embossing, and it looked like a beautiful hard cover book when its up on its end. I had four of them stuffed.
I noticed that on occasion the coin peeked out from the slider and was touching the outer pvc page. That was it for me. For the life of me, I couldn't find replacement pages where i could use the 2 x 2's carboard flips but keep the outer album.
The album had 4 rings, and the 2 x 2''s holders were only geared for 3. So, had to buy a new ablum and then used the gromotted 3 holed pages.
I wish I did it right the 1st time, but I didn't know better then.
