Hey guys.. new to the board and just getting back into the hobby after being out for a number of years. Anyway.. I'm interested in what you all think about one coin I have from my Grandfather, a 1914 Gold Indian Head $2.5. The pictures really dont do it justice... the back of the coin is in excellent condition the front has fantastic definition as well.. his head wreath is a little worn. Also, there is some gummy stuff from tape on the front (my grandfather had it taped to a piece of cardboard for a number of years. Sorry for the semi-blurry picutres.. one aspect I need to work on. I'm going to bring the coin to Stacks in NYC on Monday when I go to work and have them take a look. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a53/frankjg2/2009_0228misc0002.jpg http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a53/frankjg2/2009_0228misc0003.jpg http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a53/frankjg2/2009_0228misc0010.jpg
Welcome to CoinTalk, Frank. This is a great place to learn about coins. You pics are too blurry to tell much about your $2 1/2 Indian but it does look to be circulated. That is good as far as authenticity goes (these coins are HEAVILY counterfeited) but not good as far as value. Let us know what you find out about it.
I think I see a dark ring near the rim circling the obverse of your gold piece... if that's there, that usually means this was a jewelry coin at one time. If you can get better pics of your coin, we can do a lot to tell you about the quality and authenticity of your coin. Try macro mode with your digital camera (flower symbol). Oh, and welcome to CT!
