I asked at a neat old farm house today to metal detect and recieved permission. Huge yard.
Below are the finds for the trip. A very cool Large Cent. A appropiate for the Holiday find. Civil war patriotic token. Read the back its cool. The front with the flag reads... "The flag of our Union". To bad about the gouges in it. Still a cool find. If ya can't make out the back it reads..."If anybody attempts to tear it down Shoot him on the spot" Cool stuff. Wonder what the word "DIX" stands for.
Also found the 1862 fattie Indian head. They don't hold up to well in the dirt because they are made of the same metals as the nickel is.
The two indian heads and last but not least I nabbed 3 mercury dimes.
A very find yard to detect at. Had a blast finding this old cool stuff. Thanks for looking. Jim

How do you clean coins you find in the dirt ? Just soak them in water ?

I'll be DIX is the Roman numeral for 509. D=500 IX = 9. But what would the significance of 509 be to the Civil War?

Or maybe it is a name. I found this on a search of the internet:

"John A. Dix, A Union major general who suppressed the New York draft riots and threatened to shoot anyone hauling down the American flag". Given that, I wonder if the words on the back are a quote from General Dix?

    History sure is fun.

I soak the coppers in Peroxide. Silvers I just rinse off in the sink.
