New Designs for coinage

  1. If the United States were to change our coinage to reflect something other than our nation's founders, what do you think we would see? I was just thinking about it earlier this evening, and kinda came to the conclusion that we were stuck honoring old presidents with our coinage... once we changed the cent, everything else followed. For almost 50 years we have had a real person of historical significance represented on our coinage. I am just wondering, what happened to the idealistic depictions of liberty we used to see on our coins? Why can't we go back to that?

I know it may be getting redundant seeing all the threads about our current coinage being rather dull, but I was wondering; what do you guys think we would see on our coins if we were to go back to idealistic illustrations? What kind of designs would you want to see on our coinage?

I would LOVE to have an allegorical figure of Liberty on our coins rather than the dead Presidents we now have. But I don't think we will see it happen anytime soon. The people of Virginia don't want to give up Jefferson and Washington. The people of Massachusetts don't want to give up Kennedy. 100 years of Lincoln on the Cent is not enough for the people of Illinois. And I think the people of New York prefer to have FDR on the dime.

  4. I think we could get away with removing Lincoln after we commemorate his 200 years this year... going out with a bang, so to speak.

However, I don't think anyone would really care about Kennedy... probably .01% of the US population spend half dollars. Then again, if we replaced him on the half dollar, nobody would notice that... heh.

But in all honesty... hasn't lincoln been on the cent long enough? Wouldn't 100 years on the face of the penny make him the longest lasting design on any U.S. coin?

Liberty with purple (toned hehe)mountains majesty in the background. A broken leg shackle to signify freedom. Hair flowing behind her and fireworks in the background on the new silver dollar.

  6. That could work... maybe just on another denomination...

The thing that really sucks is that we're stuck on congress's presidential dollar program... ugh

But good idea. I especially like the broken leg shackle :D
