I dont know if this was done here before but I always find exiting to hear stores how other collectors found great value coins at a bargain price. My personal best was finding 1957 50 lepta from Greece at a local flea market for which I paid only 25 cents and later on sold on ebay for a $100 That's $100 more towards my German States coin collection. Hopefuly other will have similar stories to share.. Cheers
Cherrypicking is fun. As a teenager, I once purchased a seated quarter from a dealer who missed the "S" mintmark. That was about 70 bucks in my favor. I like to cherry toned and full-step Jeffersons also.
So far, the other day I was roll searching and found a wheat cent worth $.02, that is by far my best discovery to date.
DOH! I have never thought to look for FS jeffersons. I might be going to the local shop today for some junk silver so I may look around and see if I can cherrypick anything.
Heck yeah! Lots of dealers don't even bother looking at the steps. Now, for lots of dates, full steps is common. You should take the time to learn which dates are rare. If you're interested in full-step nickel collecting, I suggest you obtain a copy of the book "The Jefferson Nickel Analyst" by Bernard Nagengast. I think he still sells autographed copies on eBay. He breaks down the series by date and talks about the relative rarity of full-step pieces, prooflike pieces, etc. This book is a must for any serious Jefferson nickel collector.
1971 Proof sets with all three big DDO Lincolns 1971 Proof sets with all three big DDO Lincolns. Money spent - about $35, return around $2500. 1971-P quarter DDR-001, (this coin is so rare that it has been taken out of Cherry Pickers Guild with only about 6 or 7 found ever) I got it in change from Kroger and both Wexler and Potter did Coin World stories about me finding it. Money spent .25 cents, sold $750 I'll give you one more even though I have had hundreds, (of course not all this big, I wish!) Last year about this time a 2006-P DDO, the big one. Money spent, 1 cent, return about $650
I may have to look around for that book, thanks! Ok this is hilarious IMPO. I went to the coin shop today and was looking around to see if I could cherrypick anything and came out with nada. So when I was at the register finishing up I saw that they had the cherrypickers guide fifth edition volume 1 so I decided to pick it up while I was there. Then one of the coin shop workers mentioned he was a big time cherrypicker and that he discovered a couple of the varietys in the CP book and his name was mentioned in the book! So there goes my chances of ever cherrypicking anything from them LOL. I got his signature in my cherrypickers book though next to his name. :goofer: BTW I came out of the shop with more than just "junk" silver like I was expecting to. I will post pics later.
