I am new to collecting World Coins. Can anyone point me in the right direction to learn more about the symbols on the 1936 South Africa Shilling?

    Thx

"Standing female figure leaning on large anchor"

Who is the female supposed to be?

What symbolism does the anchor hold for S. Africa?

Is the star in the background supposed to be the Southern Cross?

That's what i was looking for, but you information is appreciated.

    Thx

sorry.. normaly, 'if' the figure represents 'someone' the pick books say. However, if it represents libery, as often happens on US coins, the book wont say. As for the other points of symbolism, i cant help, sorry.

Thanks for the replies and info. If I ask enough maybe I'll find out eventually. Seems to be a hard one.

alot of times, the symbolism on such coins is very apparent to those who live in that country, or part of the world. Might be something you may need to ask someone from S.A. I ask alot of questions about world notes that few people can answer :D It usually takes a person from that country who can read the language and such ... so i feel your pain lol

    Good luck :)
