There have been so many fakes in the coins forum, i got this in todays shipment, and thought i would throw it to the wolves so to speak :)

you tell me, do you think it is real.. or fake
    [IMG]

that is at 300DPi ... for 2400 dpi, click here . I scanned at such a large reso so you can really zoom into see the patern in the underprint.

the note is part of an uncut sheet i just got in. I cant read the note, so have no idea what it says - heck, it could screen in the big black letters/words in the center "I AM FAKE, DO NOT BUY ME, DO NOT SPEND ME, JUST THROW ME AWAY, AND DO IT NOW" (come on, you know its possible for 3 characters to read a sentance like that :D right?!) The sheet is 15 notes long, by 4 notes across. the sheet s is 13-15/16" long by 12" across.

so .. what say you :)

I am taking a course at this year's ANA Summer Seminar called "Detecting Counterfeit World Paper Money" (by Joe Boling). After the course I might be able to answer the question.

For now all I know to ask is - - - what about the watermark? Is there a watermark? Is it visible only when the note is held up to light or can you see it with the note lying flat on a table?

That was the first thing i did when i unrolled it. Held it to the light to check for a watermark, imbedded fibers.. anything. I found nothing. To be honest, i dont even know if this 'note', or coupon, is supposed to have a watermark. All my other ration coupons do not .. at least those i checked.

The paper is a thin type bond, sorta like the rice coupons, but possibly a bit thinner.

One thing i forgot to mention, this coupon is supposed to be for the ration item cloth.

one other thing... i have a counterfeit US $20, 2004 series. Alot of local food establishments got hit with them a couple years ago, as their cashiers accepted it. Several co-workers who would have given me change for it had i not told them as well. But when you look closely at the finer details and lines on the note, they are blurry, and mostly incomplete (ie, the border around the president, the small text near the bottom ect).. kind of like dotted or semi-dashed lines. Whatever printer printed that fake, it couldnt handle the tiny lines. So, with that i have a question ... can current home printer technology, handle the finer details of currency? or when you blow it up, you can really tell they are fake?

eBay auction has a lot of ration coupons, including some 1979 and 1981, 82 and 83 pieces that are very similar to your piece.

Yep, i see them pop up on Ebay all the time. Mostly i see them in those auctions where the seller says "Large lot of world notes! 100 Different" or some junk like that. Those auctions are most always the same notes ... Belarus, Craotia, Tajikistan, ect... and almost always includes china rice coupons among others....

I dont come across the ration coupons too often in auctions like you posted above. Complete sets... wel, if thats even an accurate description lol I cant find any publication that gives lists or descriptions of just what was printed and put into use during that time.

Daggarjon....my lack of knowledge on World notes has me vexed on this???
Help me understand what we are looking for to determine if it is real or not...??

    Feeling stupid at the moment!!

dont feel stupid, not at all!! I just plain cannot tell you what i am looking for :) I just dont know. The note, as far as i know, could very well be real. It could also very well not be. I have a bunch of food ration coupons, and i have seen other ration coupons, for non food items and the like. I do not pretend to know very much about these ration coupons, because without knowing the full extent of whats out there ... how can one judge how much they know... right? :)

Considering what comes out of China these days, and i am only talking about the fakes ... One cant be too sure. When the sheet came in, i wanted to post it here to ask others opinions on if they felt if it was fake. My reasons for doing this was because you dont really need to know world currency to have ideas as to weather or not a note is fake. Alot of the same principles of fake US notes can still apply to fake world notes. Hobo's idea came out of this thinking i am sure :) Alot of the indicators on US notes that tell us a note is fake, ie line quality, watermark location, security threas, ect... can all be applied to world notes as well. Nothing is perfect, as counterfeiters are getting better...as are home printers... but imho no opinion or idea is stupid - especially if it turns out to be the tipping point that says yes its real, or no its fake

So i had to post this uncut sheet here, and ask if it was fake... to see if the smarter folks here at CT could see something i couldnt or didnt.

So dont feel stupid.. you know US currency quite well.. and very well could have an idea to check, that could determine if this note is indeed fake or real ;p

If I had the time and money, I would love to dedicate some of both to building and documenting a collection of these Chinese ration coupons, as I find them fascinating. I don't have any in my collection right now, because I know that if I were to get a few, it would be all over for me. Maybe in a few years, once the kids get grown, I might find the time, and possibly the money, to pursue this thought.

(btw, Daggarjon, where at in MI are you? I spent about 8 years between Detroit and Pt. Huron. Loved the summers, hated the winters. Had to move back south, but not sure I am far enough south. Considering FL in a few years, depending on where the kids end up.)

Even modern printer technology can't make a really good counterfeit. Anyone trained who is looking for a fake can detect them.

By the way, it is not lawful to own that counterfeit note. It's one thing to have it, but to discuss it in a public forum? The Secret Service will want to speak to you now.

My knowledge of currency is, in general, zero. On a scale of zero to 10,000 my knowledge of the Chinese language is about two. I do know enough about the language to know that there are no numerical characters on the piece you show. I am therefore fairly certain that this is not a legal tender note and is probably not a token to exchange for goods of any set value.

The vertical black bar on the right might be seen as a unit value except that the Chinese "one" is written as a horizontal bar.

Thanks davidh :) and congrats on your 1000th post :D

this is what i was told when i bought it.. the sheets was
    .

from what i have of other ration notes, they were denominated in Jin or KG. but they were food. So if this is .1 .. is it .1 pound, .1 kg, .1 pant leg or shirt sleeve??

    If on a scale of 1 to 10,000 your a 2 for reading this.. then i must be a negative 10,000 :D

It is a ration coupon, they exist in the millions. There are varieties of them, depending on what was being rationed - but practically none of them have more than a novelty value.
