Finalized downward . . . ?

My latest submission from NGC just returned. Everything came back as expected, except for one coin. Apparently, NGC originally graded that coin MS63 as I did, shot the photos, and then downgraded it to MS62 before returning it to me.

Below are NGC's photos of the coin graded MS63 which, as of today, can still be seen on their verification page.

    And below are mine . . .

Has anyone else received grades for which the photos on the verification page contradicted the final grade?

That’s super odd. I’m sure NGC will make it right

Never even heard of that but I'd be in contact with them about it. I'd print that page first though.

Yes, absolutely. Many times. This happens as you say, when finalization changes the grade, or also if the coin fails QC. For example, the slab is cracked, the coin was holdered in a way not corresponding to instructions on the submission form, there is a gasket problem, or any issue with the label that requires correction. Most of the time I have seen this discrepancy, it is when I discovered a problem and had them correct it before it shipped.

Good to know Jason. You must be checking very frequently to catch errors before they ship, as I'm pretty sure they ship same day or next day after graded.

Something similar has only happened to me once. With PCGS. They called a coin VF details, damage. Then when it arrived at my door it was VF30 (or maybe 25) straight graded! I called and they asked me to send a picture of the coin in the slab. I did, then they responded to send it back on their dime. They reviewed it, changed the Cert verification to VF30, then mailed it back to me in the straight grade holder.

I once bought an NGC Morgan that was in an MS 65 star holder but the cert verification showed the same coin in an MS 65 PL holder. I asked NGC about the discrepancy and they said it was just a mechanical error that was caught after the photo was taken but they didn't update the photo afterwards.

You can send all your faster submissions in with a "ship with" attached to a slower tier submission. It could even be one coin on a slower tier, submitted just for this purpose. That way they are graded and then sit around waiting before they ship out. That gives you some time to get mistakes identified and fixed. If you call to point out mistakes before grading, they will just tell you to wait and see what the final label will be, but most of the time the grading room won't catch label errors on specialized material.

I don't know why they don't offer to hold shipments before they go out, and wait for customer approval. It would save them a lot of money compared to having people mail them in for corrections on the company's dime. Many of my submissions are world coins that they do not have examples of in their world census, for numerous reasons. If I didn't do this, I would go insane sending coins in for label corrections.

The change might not have had anything to do with the coin itself. Could have been a typo (aka mechanical error) that was caught before shipping. I once had a proof coin come back with a MS grade. I just emailed them about it; they said send the coin back and we’ll correct the label, which they did.

Yeah but they photographed it in the 63 holder when it was finalized. Couldn't be a typo if they switched out the label. They had to have made a new insert for it.

Why couldn't someone have noticed the label was wrong after the slab was photographed? Then the label was changed, but not the photograph on their servers. I've had a label problem corrected at NGC, and they did not bother to photograph the coin with the corrected label.
