    Well. That’s it ya’ll.

I’d like to reiterate my genuine thanks to Randy and John (messydesk) for the mentoring and photography help. And my genuine thanks to each of you who took the time to advise me on this set.

This has been a rewarding experience for me. Learning passable coin photography…much less details about the coins themselves that I was clueless about. Two months ago I came on CT a complete dork with zero understanding of this world.

The very first day I posted on this type set, one of you literally pulled over your car and essentially wrote, “STOP….don’t disrespect the time your Grandpa put in to this.”

That advice has meant the world to me because it came from good-hearted people who helped me realize there are some things more valuable than money.

The past two months have been a crash course for me regarding coins. Clueless otherwise. The last thing I’d want to do is piss off my Grandpa Jim. And I mean it: you folks have channeled him in a way I am sincerely grateful for.

I have come to understand that this collection, pending any information unknown to me right now, isn’t worth life changing money such that I’d be willing to trade the heirloom. Accordingly, you folks have helped me understand that money isn’t the only point. And that that’s what coin collecting is too.

    I hope ya’ll have a Merry Christmas.

You have a very valuable, high grade collection. I strongly suggest that you contact Ian Russell (ian@greatcollections.com) at Great Collections (GC) and tell him about your collection; include the link to your posting above and also any of the closeups that you have. he can give you a ballpark of what they might fetch on their auction website (Great Collections is one of the premiere auction websites; I have sold the bulk of my collection--including a Gold Type Set and other gold coins--with excellent results and the lowest fees in the industry). With the value of your set, Ian may even pay for FedEx Insured delivery to GC. Some of the advantages that selling on GC are: Free expert evaluation and appraisal. If you agree to let GC auction your coins, you can get a cash advance of up to 50% of GC's appraisal without having to wait the approximately 45-90 days that it typically takes to the final sale check being issued. For grading, coins are sent to either PCGS, NGC, or ANACS--your choice--and only cost $10 for standard grading; variety attribution--if desired--is extra per the TPG schedule. Ian both sends to, and receives back the coins from the TPG of choice at NO COST TO YOU. There is a standard Listing fee of $3 for each coin, a fee of 10% for coins that sell under $1,000, and 0% for coins that sell over $1,000 (which quite a few of yours would net). All-in-all, the lowest cost to you of almost any auction house or online venue that has any significant clientele or internet presence. Good luck with whatever you decide.

NO, you DIDN'T come on here a complete dork. You did the right thing. You came on here and asked questions and learned something and applied it. You did well by your grandpa. YOU INVESTIGATED FIRST. THAT IS THE KEY. And we commend you for it!!!! Your grandpa's collection is indeed a fine one. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

The mouth. That's one of the wooden "capsules" he'd roll the bill up into.

Local mom posted in neighborhood FB group that her son was looking for old pennies to collect. I invited her and her kids over to look at the collection. Weirded me out that this 9 year old boy knew:
    1. BU, AU, XF, VF
    2. Who VDB was
    3. Knew about PCGS

Told him on the spot that he made a bunch of people proud that he never met.

I'm wearing mine. That's his Redbook, his gloves, and his scale. Kid was intense. LOL.

Full disclosure. I have recently been educated that the 1915 - S Indian Head gold eagle is likely fake. Grandad bought it in April 1980 from an individual and paid $650. There are suspected tool marks below the arrows at the ends of the leaves.

I have no records suggesting Grandad knew it was fake when he put it in his book. So he apparently got took. Which he would have handled personally had he known. Likely sending him to jail for assault.

Thanks to Mike @ToughCOINS for the catch.
