I have really enjoyed the opinions so far. Thanks all. I have so many raw Morgans and Peace dollars - some super shiny, many with various types of toning - and I am trying to get a handle on whether I have a good idea of how they might grade if I slabbed them. Here's an 1878-s
I'm really curious about your coins, it seems that every one has this pale organge color. Is that really how the coins look in hand or is it just your pictures doing that ? I would suggest that you take a few pics using a white background. Then if the background is the correct color in the pic you know that you getting the right color. If it isn't, you aren't.
and from the pics the way they are... there is really no way to tell if there is any luster at all... just details alone...
the color is likely Flourecent lights. I have this problem all the time with Silver. Anyway MS-64+ Ruben
Sure looks like a white balance problem to me.... That said, like others, the photos don't portray the luster well enough to feel confident in any grade assessment. Those disclaimers aside, the coin appears to me to be a 64 or 65. The cheek looks clean enough for the 65 grade, but I'm a bit concerned with high-point wear / bag friction -- and the luster is going to also tell a very important story when it comes time to grade the coin. Hope this helps...Mike
im gonna say that that lighting is hiding a lot of light abrasions... look in the hair for example... looks like lots of little contacts... ill say a 63 at best
I also give it a 63. Nice coin. I adjusted the color a little so all the imperfections are revealed. http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww227/sambot12/1878-Sob.jpg http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww227/sambot12/1878-Sre.jpg
My computer doesn't display those images without clicking on them. Maybe you can post them as images here? Ruben
If there was a little wear on the coin to make it AU, would you even be able to see it with that lighting?
Nice coin I'll say MS-63 sounds right . Does the coin in hand have that orange color , or is it the lighting ? rzage
What's going on with the LLAR in Dollars looks like doubling, but it could just be from the toning. There's like 100 different VAMs for the 1878 S. Could you maybe get some close ups of it?
The LLAR is just the actual letters in DOLLAR on the reverse as in ONE DOLLAR. It could also just be from toning, I'm not sure, closer pics would help. VAMworld » Morgan VAMs By Date Here's a great site if you ever wan't to check any of your Morgans. -Mike
VAM World is really cool. The variety of them all is astonishing. Seems like you would need some good magnfication to find these things on a coin without going blind...
Yeah you would probably need a magnifier, or some decent macro pics. I usually just use macro pics and blow them up on the computer.
Some have the patience for such things. I do not! I discovered this today : ) I also cannot put a model together, finish a crossword puzzle, jigsaw puzzle, etc We do what we're good at, right? Oh well.
