Went to pick up some eggnog at the grocery store for the Mrs and tadpoles this evening. I always check the coinstar on the way out and every once in awhile I find a coin or two. Tonight, I hit the jackpot! I told Mrs Frog that once Covid is over, we can finally go to Europe and she can buy whatever she wants (as long as it is under 2 Euros ). Oh, and I even found a silver quarter to boot!
Very nice @furryfrog02, although I'd personally be more excited about that silver quarter. Almost every single piece of silver I typically find in the reject slot is usually a 64 or 64-D.
I always love finding foreign stuff in the machine. It all goes to FFIVN though. He has quite a big foreign coin collection. He was pretty happy since a lot of the 5c Euro coins were from Germany but were different mint marks. The 43P quarter goes into my tube of quarters that I find in boxes. It's about 3/4 full after probably 100+ boxes of quarters.
In that case, I wouldn't be half surprised if the original depositor is a member of the armed forces. Not to mention FFIVN should have a leg up if he ever does the coin collecting merit badge, assuming he joins the Boy Scouts later on.
I'm in the military and we do have a somewhat sizeable military population around here so that is entirely possible. I've found all kinds of stuff from this particular coinstar in the past. One of the coolest though, was a 1918 German 10 Pfennig. FFIVN is in Cub Scouts right now and he earned the coin collecting belt loop last year. Between is foreign collection and his ancient collection, he is far and above where I was at his age. That's for sure. Here is that 10 Pfennig btw:
Nice haul! It has gotten to the point that my dear wife (when going to Kroger's, Meijer's or Walmart) will say to me: "Did you check the CoinStar?" - gotta love her for that! Here's my fave pickups, to date:
Nice @AmishJedi ! I have yet to find a South African coin in the coinstar. This particular coinstar yields quite a few African and Middle Eastern coins. Not things you see every day. They've added to FFIVN's world coin collection. He is trying to get one coin from each country. He's doing pretty well so ar.
Check that 10pfennnig for "beads" - can't tell from the image, but one with beads (the 1918D) and sticks to a magnet is worth some bucks (if made of iron): https://coinquest.com/cgi-bin/cq/coins.pl?coin=1094
That is a Portugal 5c Euro. I don't know what eggnog tastes like. Never tried the stuff. It pours out real thick and reminds me of snot lol.
I'm thinking of sending that one in for grading (great strike, fields are 99.9% perfect, gorgeous mint luster) - what do you think?
NGC shows a 1967 in MS65 being worth about 50 cents. I wouldn't waste my money on it. It is a really nice looking coin though. Especially for a coinstar find.
It could possible grade 65+/66, but you are right, definitely not worth it. Back in the 2x2 it goes. I thought it was a proof it is so shiny/perfect. I was quite surprised myself - thanks. Don't you wish you could trace the history of some of these coins - man, I bet they would have some stories to tell!
That's half the fun of collecting. Especially with ancients. FFIVN and I love to talk and think about all the history that has passed through peoples' hands through the ages and finally arrived with us.
