A google search tells me these were minted in SF. A couple of years are listed as having no mint mark but 1919 is not one of them. What’s with this square where the “S” should be? Thanks!

So someone deliberately “battered” the S and left the rest of the coin alone? It doesn’t make sense.

What does make sense is circulation wear.

I have a pile of coins minted in San Francisco. None of the mint marks have morphed into squares.

But you guys have provided me solid answers on my other questions so I will go with wear on this one.
    Thanks and happy holidays!

You have more Philippine Coins with obvious "S" MM's or, US Coins similar to the Philippine one you show in your thread? Since San Francisco was the only mint that produced the subject coin, one can safely argue the MM on your coin is an "S", but it sure has the shape of a "D".;)
