I know there are a lot of fakes out there so I just wanted to get an opinion from someone who knows what they are looking for. Thanks Tue Dec 22 18-01-11.jpg Tue Dec 22 18-39-20.jpg Tue Dec 22 18-40-45.jpg

Not an expert but I'm leaning towards fake only because it's not certified and a high grade coin in this condition is worth hundreds of dollars if real. Were did you find or get it? better pictures would help also.

If it is that color, I would be suspicious. Jim

"In the pink" isn't good for cents.

It's actually more of a brown color. I think my lighting is causing the color to look lighter. I found this in a coin roll from an estate sale

Strange color for s copper Cent, I would be suspicious of it.

    I'm leaning towards fake.
The strike appears too soft for a coin with that much detail.

I am very suspicious of the general mushiness of the devices and lettering on both obverse and reverse.

The MM looks OK to me but I'm no expert. If you want to hear an expert talk about 1909-S real and counterfeit mintmarks, go to Rick Snow's presentation on the ANA eLearning Academy. I just happened to look at this yesterday before the OP's posting. Here's the link to Rick's website and the page opens to the link to the presentation. Go to time marker 1:36:45.

One of things to look for is odd lumps that are not typical of original coins and that can be artifacts of the transfer die process. Also, sometimes in the transfer die process the transfer of some elements is not perfect and shows up.

I have hi-lited some odd lumps on the obverse and reverse of the OP coin and an odd-looking crumbled upper loop of S.

There are also some strange looking lumps and bumps on Liberty's cheek and temple that I cannot make much of due to the quality of the photograph.

All of this together along with general mushiness makes me think this is a counterfeit.

The piece also appears to have a wire rim on the reverse. Look at the upper left side of the photo. The genuine coin does not have that.
