Hello my name is Jason Merry Xmas to everyone!I have a an important quhich is I found a 1985p in a in shop In an old yellow flip.I took it out of the flip today and it has a silver edge and I don't see clad.Is this a rare find?is this silver??
The edge of the coin has reacted to being in the old yellow flip. The fact the flip is referred to as being yellow indicates it is made with PVC and has yellowed from originally being clear. The PVC used in the manufacturing process is known to cause coins to adversely react to being inside such flips over time. What you have is a regular 1985-P clad quarter. Unless you want to do it for educational purposes, there is no need to bother weighing it and comparing it to pre-1965 quarters. If the quarter is otherwise well-preserved and lustrous I'd set it aside and save it.
First, welcome to the neighborhood, Jason! Your coin is just a regular clad quarter. The darker portion of the edge is the copper that has discolored. Merry Xmas to you, too! ~Chris
It's not silver. You can see where the copper was colored over. You can always weigh it. Silver quarters are 6.25 grams and clad 5.67g.
