Two years ago I won the Byzantine gold coin pictured below at a Heritage auction for $660.00, plus NYS tax & shipping, totaling $728.00. I have received 3 anonymous offers for this coin (rejecting the first 2 offers). The last offer was $1,050.00, minus a 10% fee Heritage charges for doing the transaction + shipping, bringing the actual offer to $930.00. It hardly seems worth it to me to sell this coin for a $200.00 profit after enjoying it for 2 years. What do CT members think about this transaction ? About 8 years ago I won a Brazilian 20,000 reis gold coin at a Heritage auction that I thought was seriously under-graded at AU53, for $7,343.75. Two months later I got an offer via Heritage for $9,700 minus there !0% fee, bringing the actual offer to $8,730.00. I took the offer making nearly $1,400.00 on the transaction . Who ever ended up with the coin must have realized it was under-graded too .
That's one bada$$ coin, and I don't even collect ancients! If you don't need the money, I would keep it!
What is special about this coin compared to hundreds of other common solidi available much of the time? Why is this coin in demand from people who could buy a different one? Why did you spend $728 on a coin you did not want to keep long term? The answer to the above questions should guide your action now. I assume you would rather have the money to put toward a better coin (more rare, more interesting, better in some way) rather than just to have cash in hand for other purposes.
Keep it! If they want it that bad to contact you, they will want it more so after a couple more years.
While the amount is much lower, it's actually a much better profit percentage wise. Around a 27% gain versus 19% for the Brazilian if I didn't bungle the calculations. I collect Byzantine gold, so for me personally, I would keep the coin because it's quite nice. But for you, maybe it's not part of your focus in collecting or you just don't like the coin as much as you did? I'm not familiar with the system, can you counteroffer with a higher amount?
View attachment 1220388 Actually I did buy this coin with the idea of keeping it in my personal collection . This coin was bought as a replacement to another solidus I sold at a Heritage auction pictured below. This coin type is very common & Heritage has sold scores of them, however, they are very popular & nice looking examples bring a good price at auction. The coin pictured below I bought from a Rochester, NY dealer for $150.00 over 30 years ago. I got the coin slabbed & enjoyed it for a long time but wanted a better example, that's why I bought the first coin posted. I sold this coin at a Heritage auction two years ago for $960.00 & was happy with the result . I thought NGC was generous giving a star to this coin. If you enlarge the image you can see a lot of die rust on the obverse.
Upon reading the CT member comments & some personal reflection I'm going to keep my Byzantine solidus .
