Ok, you know what do do. BTW, I just got it—the holder is dirty, and scratches are on the holder, not the coin. Slab needs car waxing. Comments encouraged. The pictures are acknowledge as subpar, and not ideal. However, make this a useful exercise.
Hey, I would delete this thread if I could, but if folks can’t guess a grade from so so pictures, they shouldn’t be buying coins. As I said, the slab is dirty, has some scratches, and needs to be cleaned and polished—look at the coin. Make this a learning experience, as opposed to trashing the pictures. 90% of the time, you will be buying coins from below average pictures. Strike? Surfaces? Fields? Luster? Devices, and do they have distracting marks? Is the coin contrasty enough to be PL or DMPL? Bagmarks—more or less than typical for a Morgan?
Probably missing a VAM here but that Eagle is just a little distracting. It gets a Gem BU + for originality but the spots kind of kill it for me. Tough to say the reverse is easy for PL and looks like yours is common. I can't make a descisio on the obverse, except that there is a definite contrast on the devices. Fairly clean so I will go MS66
My guess is MS 64 ....the photo does make a non PL vs PL call hard (what I see makes me lean towards not PL)....the grade might be higher but what seem like spots and some hits make me hedge towards a lower number
I am going to say AU-58 It may just be the photos but it looks like wear on the wing tips , possible luster rub above the ear , forehead above the eye , some on the hair above the forehead ,and possibly wheat , cotton ball and leaves , minor luster rub but enough for AU-58 just my thought , if I was buying this as uncirculated it would need to be with a buyer that took returns , if it was a auction though the bids would likely stay low based on the pics . Just my thoughts. strike looks decent for a O though
Ok, not going to prolong this one. People are grading the slab, and not the coin. It is a messy slab. The coin is very clean, and strongly PL. I did this GTG, as I think it is a 65 PL, and was deciding whether to send it in for upgrade. I will post the coin again, once I get the slab in better shape,as this pic shows the dirt and scratches.
Good idea. I am having a hard time seeing the prooflike with the photos . Mostly the glare or lighting I am sure. The smaller photo though took away what I thought was wear or luster rub on the obverse though .I am sure that PL MS-64 in the old green holder is a nice coin though .
But, that's what you do. You're good at it. I wouldn't buy it because I am not good at guessing. And, the person who assigned the grade didn't need to guess through the plastic.
What a bummer. I was checking out this thread and my initial thought was 65PL, then thought again and lowered the grade to 64PL. I scrolled down reading the posts then saw your post of the actual grade. I finally get one right and my response is like Monday morning quarterbacking.
I was going to guess 64 and did notice there is no sign of cartwheel. Can we get after pictures when you're done detailing the slab?
Guys, I picked this one up from a Jeweler, not a coin dealer. It probably sat in a drawer, and has 10 years of dirt and grime on it. As soon as it came in the mail, I took one look at it, despite the messy slab, and it screamed two things: prooflike, and undergraded. I paid half of what a normal prooflike would cost. My only decision is whether to send it in and specify minimum grade 64 PL, and hope for an upgrade, or keep it in the OGH. This slab is such a mess that I would be tempted to keep it in the OGH, and clean and polish it. I have probably 40 PL and DMPL coins—they are between 63 and 66, with the majority at 65.
