Take a look at this picture and tell me what you think. It’s a close-up so the colors are kind of off but notice how there is like a soft spot to the details near the center of the crown? Is it a planchet flaw? (edit: more likely a filled die error from grease?) Any reason to think it would result in a details grade from a grading company?
It looks like a weak strike to me. It does not look like greese to me. I can't see any reason why this would keep the coin from getting a straight grade. You have not shown us the whole coin, so there could be something else. This is the so-called "Gothic design." Only the crown seems to get that name although the lower denominations have the same design. The crown is an expensive coin. Here is my Gothic florin.
Good to know. Yours is gorgeous. Care to venture a guess on the grade of my coin? Hoping for AU. My guess on yours is MS63. I sent mine to NGC last week.
I think you get an EF-45 or perhaps an AU-50. There is quite a bit of friction in the obverse fields. I assume that the reverse is stronger, but it does not help much.
The irony is that I only have one other Gothic Florin, and it's the same date, and graded EF45. I picked this one for a great price, and I'm hoping to squeak out slightly higher grade on this one. But yeah, that's where I put the grade...45 or 50...could go either way.
If the reverse is similar and there aren’t hairlines not obvious on photo, it likely would go 50, with chance at 53.
Thanks. I agree with you, mostly from the detail on the shoulder. The shoulder is usually the first thing to wear out on these coins and this one does look pretty good. I think it looks better than the other.
And now, the rest of the story. My coin is finally back from NGC. They graded it AU, cleaned. I can’t believe they gave it a cleaned grade. There is decent toning on this coin and it looks original surfaces to me. I’m kind of pissed about it honestly. I’m wondering if I should crack it And send it to another service. Or should I just sell it as is since I already have one? I truly did not see that coming!
