Hi There, I want to drill a very small hole in a coin as part of a magic trick - the elastic goes up yoru sleeve, and when you palm the coin, it magically dissapears ;o). Now that i've spoiled the magic for you.. I'm aware there are legal implications for drilling holes in active currency but i was thinking of using an overseas coin (canadian toonie?) or a currency no longer in use.. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any advice on attempting something like this? i had assumed the internet would have a primer on this sort of thing SOMEWHERE but i dont know much about the handiman sort of things.. blaphemer! ok, seriously, you might be able to find a pre-drilled coin for this trick - I know I see enough that have already seen this unfortunate event in their history. Seems I've seen a drilled example of just about every coin I own.
Many people specialize in collecting coins with holes -- "holeys." I'm sure there are a ton of them out there, try a local coin shop. Alternatively, use a Chuck E. Cheese token or a bus token.
?? You can do whatever you want to with a coin, current or otherwise. There may be some restrictions, such as you can't put your political advertisement on it and spend it, but if you want to squish it, bend it, melt it, etc., you are legally entitled. For US currency (banknotes), it is illegal to deface it with the INTENT of rendering it UNSUITABLE for reiussuance. Note the words INTENT and UNSUITABLE. If it is unsuitable for reissuance but that was not your intent to damage it to that point, you are safe. If you write on it but do not render it unsuitable for reissuance, then you are safe. In any case, with coins it is all legal, so drill away.
Bacchus: Many people specialize in collecting coins with holes -- "holeys." really? where do i find these 'holey' people (sorry, i counldn't resist...) . my father-in-law left dozens of coins with holes in them...(like a flying eagle penny, large cents, etc). i was told these were 'worthless'.
I have a 'holey' 1882 IH penny. Where would you suggest selling it??? Ebay, or possibly a buy-sell forum?
