A take off on a Silverstruck thread asking OUR specialty, lets have a thread with you listing OTHERS specialty. I'll start with a few of my own to set the pace #1. ) Rick Snow. Obviously the top of the food chain with the Flying Eagle and Indian cents.......Rick has contributed more to the study and knowledge of these coins than any other human on the planet. His photoseal is a value added service that rivals and TOPS any CAC sticker. #2.) J. Kline. The Beard. The Tophat. He wrote the book on the Standing Lib quarters and is a major market maker. The guy knows every date and mintmark in his head, and is a fantastic legend to talk to. #3.) Brian Wagner While not a famous name or face, Brian has brought the matte proof Lincoln into the mainstream and has assembled some of the most spectacular collections that have ever exsisted. #4.) David Lange While not a dealer due to his affiliation with NGC, David's book is considered the bible to collectors, and his knowledge is vast. A true Lincoln afficianado and a top expert in the series. I believe that these folks know more about their series than most all others put together
I didn't know if he was refering to bigger name specialists, or just anyone we know that has a "specialty", lol. Phoenix
He is talking about people who are considered to be the authority regarding the coins they specialize in.
Dan Sedwick - speiclaizes in Spanish colonial coinage. Wrote the Practical Book of Cobs and has consulted and helped with many other books on the subject. Rick Ponterio - probably the second most knowledgeable person there is regarding Spanish colonial coinage. And in some areas like the early mints, probably knows more than even Dan. Fred G. van den Haak - specializes in the coinage of the Netherlands. Probably has the best library there is on the subject and knows more about Netherlands coinage than anyone else I ever heard of. Nicholas Mayhew - specializes in French coinage from the Dark Ages to Napoleon with a primary specialty in the Gros Tournois.
Keep'em coming. I want to know in particular the top Buffalo 5 cent, the Merc dime and the Morgan dollar authorities. I have my ideas on the morgan, but the other series have me wondering.
For Conder tokens, I would say Jerry Bobbe of cheapsidetokens However, he knows a great deal about colonial and early copper too.
You're gonna have to go some to beat Lange on the Buff and Merc. As for the Morgan, I'd say Bowers, discounting the VAM aspect of course. Answer is obvious on those.
I can think of one other cointalker besides Rick Snow and Frank...... Condor, he is a specialist on slabs and their history. If I knew his real name, I would add it to the list if he gave me permission. I would also like to add Acanthite, but he has yet to write a book ( not that that is a requirement, but it helps ) Oops, just thought of another, lets add Mark Goodman on numismatic photography
I've said it enough times I don't think he minds - Michael Schmidt. He's no slouch on early copper either.
I have the Lange books on the Merc and Buff Let me ask a question. The Wayne Miller book is on Ebay, 2 this week...would you still consider it a must have?
In all honesty, yes. To truly understand any series and get the full benefit of the accumulated knowledge - you need all the books. You will find something in every single one that is not in any other.
Sorry AJ, I've got to bring this up! He might take issue with your misspelling of his board name! :rolling: Condor is a bird, but Conder is the U.S. term for 18th century british provincial tokens that he collects (a James Conder was a contemporary cataloguer of these tokens back then and his work was the foundation for later reference materials). Conder101 has been very helpful to me in my pursuit of collecting these wonderul early copper pieces and has produced reference material of his own on this series. I've also been amazed at what he knows about a variety of numismatic subjects!
Tom Deck - Early Cents (1792 thru 1807) Bob Grellman - Braided Hair Cents Louis Jordan, III - Colonial period (coins & paper & more) Will Nippier - Colonial period coinage Ribbit
Hobo Nickel Experts The following two individuals are Hobo Nickel experts. Both are authenticators for OHNS (Original Hobo Nickel Society): Stephen Alpert Bill Fivaz Bill Fivaz is also somewhat of an expert on Buffalo Nickels but I'm sure Lange is more of an expert (because he wrote "the book").
