Picked this up from a local dealer a little while ago, figured i'd share it with the community, lemme know what you think, i see what appears to be some die cracks all over the coin, and perhaps a die break in the hair where her ear is. 1922 die break.jpg

What did the coin dealer say it was. Or did he not notice?

He said it was a die break, and i have no reason to not believe him, but its always nice to get a second opinion.

I want to ask if you can provide a better picture if that is possible.

That would help us in seeing the issue better.

Try a shot of the coin near a window where you can get difused sunlight.

Could be die cracks but really hard to tell with that photo. Here is my usual recommendation to new members about photos. Hope it helps.
You should always post in focus FULL IMAGE photos (after you upload your photo, two buttons appear: Thumbnail and Full Image, click Full Image and your photo appears full size on your post and is easily enlarged by clicking on it). Photograph coins on neutral backgrounds like black, grey, or white. Crop out superfluous background so just the coin shows, and post photos with correct orientation so members don't have to turn their computer in some awkward fashion to view it properly. While it isn’t always necessary, it is nice to show both the obverse and reverse, even if your question is just about one side. Members can often give more valuable information having both sides to evaluate. Add close ups of areas you have questions about and make your questions as definitive as possible so we know what you are asking for. And try to have the best lighting possible to show the most favorable photo of the coin.

I'll chime in with my opinion when a better image is provided. I love die breaks and cracks on coins. I'm very interested in seeing this.

Its got a lot going on, i don't really know what a die break looks like, but i can see several die cracks in the coin, the break would be in the hair by her ear, but i'm not sure if its a break or like you said @SensibleSal66 it might be damaged, i'm new to varieties it just looked so interesting to me, so much going on with this one.

Over her ear and upper cheek is a deep scratch or gouge, so , damaged. From the tiara ray along under the R to the hair bun looks like a die crack. Possible also from the Y down to trust but your image is not clear enough. See if you can match it up to known examples here, http://vamworld.com/wiki/1922-P_VAMs, I am assuming from your title it is a P, but if a different mint then just choose the one you need from the list

Die breaks (die cracks) are recessed in the die, so they will be RAISED on the coin. The mark by the ear is recessed, so it can’t be an internal die break. It’s a circulation contact mark – PMD. I do see a die break under the R in Liberty, but nothing else

As mentioned, there's the common Die Crack
below and to the left of the R, and a possible
crack from the U of Trust going up, but that's
about it - the rest are contact marks/bag marks, imo.

That is a scratch across the face but if you look under the R in LIBERTY, you'lll see what a die crack looks like. It touches the base of the R and goes from Liberty's hairline to the first raised point on her crown.

Die cracks on Peace Dollars are somewhat common due to the design.

Wow, what a bummer, nice coin though, it's a keeper. Thanks for the post.

Through the base of the R is a die crack (die cracks and die breaks are NOT the same thing, unfortunately many people use the two terms interchangably).

At the ear appears to be a scratch.

There may be a crack running through the base of the neck with die chipping along the crack creating a small internal die break.

Here is a simple rule to remember. If the line is raised on the coins surface, it's a die crack/break. If the line is sunk in like a valley, it's a scratch on the coin.

What would cause damage like that? It looks like its missing details in person, i ordered a digital camera but shipping is crazy this time of year.
