This coin is blown out. Can anyone tell me what type of coin this is? Also what was the reason to blow out coins?

its a Byzantine coin, I know enough to tell that but not enough to give any other details. Not sure why some of their coins were cup shaped, but its not an uncommon trait with the Byzantine coins.

Might get more information if you asked @lordmarcovan to move this over to the ancients fourm. The pic is a bit dark, but there are some really knowledgeable people over there...

Yep... It is Byzantine and is made that way. I am not as schooled as the incredibly educated folks are in the ancients section, but I do have a soft spot for Byzantine pieces. You will need to remove it from the 2X2 but the folks over there can cover you up with info on that coin.

I agree. Byzantine. A trachy, most likely. "Cup-shaped", as made. Struck in billon, I would imagine.

But you're going to need to drastically improve your photos (i.e., redo them), if you want anyone to be able to assist you in attributing it any further.

I'll move this to Ancients. Please take your seats and buckle your seatbelts, ladies and gentlemen. This thread will be moving in ten seconds. You may feel a slight jolt or tremor in the process.

Looks like a billon trachy to me too.
You can take better pics to post or go here and see if you can ID it yourself.
