I used to have a nice collection of CWT's years ago and about a dozen suttler tokens. Eventually had to sell them to pay the bills...how boring:D

Although I never had a "Spoot" error it was one of my favorites. It's a great series to collect. I especially liked the store cards.

Ah yes, the good old “spoot” variety. It is surprisingly hard to find nice, EF or better. I had one nice one that I sold when I was a dealer. I used to keep at least 300 to 500 pieces in stock when I was setting up at the shows.

I have maybe a couple hundred varieties or so, which is a very modest collection. The important collections get up to 5,500 or so. Dave Bowers set out to get them all, over 10,000 if you count all of the off-metals. He got many of them, but, of course, he buys and sells, which is why you see slabbed pieces with his name on them.

I have a collection of tokens by Milwaukee die maker, John Marr. He did beautiful work. I see of I have the time to post some of his work in a new string.

Yes, I have a (not very active) little sub-collection of CWTs. My own, not as nice as OP, "SPOOT" type:

A "Liberty and No Slavery" (the only direct reference to slavery on a CWT):

And two Lincoln pieces from the Presidential campaign of 1864:

I just have a few of the common ones. Don't have much for pictures either. I've always thought someday I might focus on them more...I think they are really neat.

    You mean this one ....

    58 439 All.jpg

The die variety is 58 / 439 a. It's rated as an R-3 and is not that hard to find, at least it wasn't when I was dealer a bit over a decade ago. Slabbing costs have driven up some of the prices, especially if they put them in the high Mint State grades. This one is very high end AU.

I have a collection of Civil War Tokens, both Patriotic and Store Cards. If you are serious about collecting them buy the two Fuld references as without the reference books you have a very difficult time typing the pieces. What I love about them is they are an actual piece of American History created primarily during the Civil War.

Been collecting CWT’s for a number of years focusing on Michigan store cards. About a year ago I found the last store card for a town and cities collection. That was, of course, the hardest to obtain token from Saranac, Michigan.
Fuld ID is MI865A-3a, rarity is 9.

This token is one of a total of seven known, spread over four varieties. Each die was hand engraved as evidenced by the differences in each letter and device. The engraver is unknown.

That is the one. I see a few on the bay . One is really bright so not sure if it has been cleaned or just the photo light. The other looks cleaned . I will keep my eyes open. Yours is a nice example.

I had a good size collection of them. However, I sold most of them off in the late 80's. Regret it.

In 1967, I found this in my Grandmother’s coffee can of change ( the coins she pulled out of her purse each nite.) It is my first coin to start me collecting.

I still have this, and will probly go to my grave with me.

I have been collecting Civil War Tokens since the 1960s. Over the last few years I have tried to restrict my collecting to Lincoln campaign (see my Lincoln Avatar) and civil war tokens in addition to the primitive patriotic tokens. It has come the time when I need to let others enjoy them (except for a few). I will try to upload a some token pictures later. BTW, If anyone is looking for certain ones, patriotic or store card, let me know.

The Civil War Token Society has published new books for the Patriotic and Store Card series. They have a lot more information than the older Fuld books did.

If you are a serious collector, the Civil War Token Society is a must. They offer discounts on many books and have quarterly journal that often contains a lot of new information.

I just bought a slabbed MS64 1863 Washington/ Star of David in Wreath CWT as a Christmas gift for my son. Last year I gave him a slabbed proof 3CN. He needs a hobby and I'm hoping that these gifts will spark an interest in coin collecting.
