Cointalk Grade - RB1 (REALLY BAD) Ebay Grade - Strong VF ANACS Grade - P01 SGS Grade - Priceless. Could it be the one that was in Lees pocket when he surrendered to Grant.
It needs to be put out of it's misery, It needs to be put out of it's misery, please someone throw it off a cliff or bury it deep in the ground - the site of it hurts my feelings. No grade just gone!
I probably won't do that - I sort of like it. I must confess that I'm the one who did this to it, but that was at a time when it wasn't at all uncommon to find 19th century coins in change. It was just another cent to me.
That's actually part of the coin surface. Either the track or the wheel that ran over it had a few pits which became bumps on the coin.
We must be looking at different coins???? We must be looking at different coins???? To be having any discussion at all (about this coin) generally surprises me but to put in some ones "low grade set"? Set it out to sea. Bury it at a construction site. Throw in in the river, (preferably the middle of a river). Coins don't have spirits you'all - they are pieces of metal. When in this shape not even that. Now granted it may have some sentimental connection to the owner, (although it's hard to see how) and that's okay but lets bury this thread with the coin. I've got it! Give it to a young person and promise him you'll get him a decent one someday and then throw it in the river. I'm sorry but as the week rolls on I guess I get more opinionated.
Except for the damage aspect, most of the new collectors haven't had to deal with the problem of grading a coin below G4. Generally a quick date check and the low end ones go into the contribution bucket. However if someday they run into a 1877 IHC they will have to look at these lower grading levels. I think TPG have more variation on whether it is a AG3/G4 than MS63/64. The morning caffeine has worn off, so maybe I am just mellow Jim
A coin's a coin. If the date is identifiable, the grading standards that I've seen allow the coin to be assigned a grade. If a 1909-S VDB cent is PO-1, but I can read the date, I'll take them out of your junk bin all day long.
