Any idea what that dark stuff is? It's a little confusing, because it is on some of the high points, making it hard to tell if the coin is MS or AU.
I'm not sure. I haven't got the coin in hand yet. Not sure if it went thru some sort of roller device or what. I plan on sending it off to NCS to see what they can do with it.
I'd say AU-53 or AU-55. It has wear on the Liberty's left arm, on the eagles left wing, and other little places. A really nice coin though, great job!
LOl...No need to duck. I am thinking Au55-Au58 myself. Might look better after the NCS trip. Thanks also Ryan.
Merci! Had a nice trip to LI this weekend. Wedding in Smithtown. Good food and drink and no snow so a good time had by all.
AU 55 FWIW, I think that coin isn't going to look nice if dipped/conserved. Circulated coins rarely do.
Thanks. Afraid with the black stuff on it I will give NCS a shot. Should get the coin in a week or so..then off to NCS then hopefully NGC. Will post the results with pictures when this little coin exposition is done.
I think when you get that coin in hand you will change your mind. There isn't anything NCS can do for that coin. When you examine it closely I believe you will find black stuff in some of the recesses, protected areas and dings. In other words, that coin has already been dipped, if not over-dipped. Those dark streaks are just the stains that remain and likely will not come off. NCS would be a waste of money IMO.
Well here is the fee structure: A simple two-part fee structure is in place. First, there is an evaluation fee to determine what, if any, conservation work is warranted. A charge of 1% of the fair market value of the coin with a minimum of $5 is charged for this service even if it is determined that no conservation is warranted. Conservation is charged at a fee of 4% of the fair market value with a minimum charge of $15. So 1 percent of say 800 bucks...8 dollars to evaluate..then of course the shipping both ways. I am shipping another coin also so that will help on the shipping charges..G is probably right but I think the 20 bucks or so is worth it for them to get it in hand to check it out.
I'll have to agree with those that say this will not go beyond NCS. It's been dipped out several times and shows the results. It's still a nice high AU detailed coin and worth good money. Either send it to NCS or ANACS or ICG and you'll have your results in a slab.
