Hi, Im a strong Canadian coin collector, but I did branch out slightly into the thrill of the U.S coins. I have the entire state quarter collection, and I am in the process of keeping current with the presidential dollars. On top of that, I decided (as stupid as it may sound), to also the collect the various U.S coins, various mint marks etc, I find in my loose change, and those from during my business travel down there. I live in Toronto, which is very close to Niagara Falls, so alot of it does hit our city. Its cheap enough to do, and change searching is still fun. I won't go into too much detail where these coins came from but I got 2, 1979 Susan B Anthony dollar coins. I can tell from above her left hand shoulder one has a P mint mark, however on the other one 9which I think may be the near variety), all I see in this same area (even while using a 10 x loupe), is just a square, exactly the same size. (Man i wish i could provide you a picture). Do you think I perhaps just have a coin where the die deterioted and in fact it may be a P mint mark as well? Is there also a D mint mark out there that this may be? Thanks to those that can help clarify. Martin
Thats a fast response borgovan, perhaps 'blob' best describes it. Well, its nice to know that it's a "D", so now I can safely say I have one of each of that year. Thanks so much
I would have to agree it is a "D". The mintmarks are tiny and unclear on all except the 1999 SBA's. I consider my eyes pretty good when it comes to close up objects, but I many times need magnification for these guys.
The S mintmark, being as the punch was heavily worn, (Think Type I) also often has a rectangular blob type appearance with only the curves on the top surface identifying it as an S.
Thanks for the continious input everybody....DOUG, YOU NAILED IT!! Indeed if I get the loupe back out, and make a comparison to what you posted, indeed I can see some curvitures (sic) of the S. (curvature, curveature..ahh forget it) I intially thought if its a blob. then its a D. Many thanks to Condor as well. Looks like I will now have to put it into a new 2x2 and change the notations on it.
