Hey everyone! A friend of made me remember that I had this coin. I've haven't yet shared it with the forum, so here it is! All grades and comments are welcome! And the spots you see I would say is just toning
Ryan that was a well struck coin given the mint. It has a few too many large hits to grade better than 63 IMO. And I would say that soemthing has contaminated the surface of that coin. What - I have no idea. It could be anything from dip residue to any liquid you can think of. But there is something on it.
Thanks guys. I agree that the spotting is due to a chemical bath. P.S. Also, for those of you who don't know, the New Orleans mint struck coins very weakly, so go easy on this one!
Yeah these pics are better. Do you guys think a new dip and a diluted water rinse will remove the old dip residue?
Yes, but it will likely impact the luster. If you don't like the coin, sell it and find one you do like. These are not rare coins and you can find one easily....Mike
To bad about the chemical bath - those spots might have eaten through in spots - This coins luster is gone on the obverse because of it. The reverse has quite a bit left surprisingly so. The strike is unusually good for New Orleans Mint to bad it was not properly conserved. I literally went through hundreds to find my 79-o I will not post it - so as to not detract from your post. It will not grade - Improperly cleaned
That is a MONSTER strike for a New Orleans coin. Doug's right, it's too hit up to technically be past an MS63, but I wouldn't be shocked if you sent it in for slabbing that ti came back in a 64 or maybe even better on the holder as it's so very well struck for a NO mint coin.
My guess is it would be body-bagged for environmental contamination. They won't even put those in Genuine slabs.
